I've never been a fan of Peak Design in general. Sacrilege, I know, but I find their stuff over-designed (ie with features that ultimately add little to function) and consequently over-priced. I think I'll pass on $600 for a tripod from a company that's never made a tripod before

I don't disagree with you. In general, I have not been a fan of their products that I've tried so far.

When it comes to tripods, I want mine to be rock solid, and I'm willing to carry a little more weight to guarantee that.

never been a fan of PD either (I've had the original PD strap) and baffles me that a well established brand like theirs still rely on Kickstarter.

this tripod looks pretty good, I like the design but other than slight size saving, it doesn't offer anything world changer than my Sirui T-025X for travel. my sirui is also lighter and cost way less than this.

Say what you want about Peak Design, but one thing they are consistent with is they don't produce "crappy" quality stuff

Not sure what "fashion" means but it appears well thought out for what it is (a travel tripod when you don't want or can't carry a full size). Different strokes as they say

It's a hard pass for me. I like Peak Design products (I have three of their bags and some accessories), but this tripod doesn't check any boxes for me. It's ridiculously priced, even at the discounted price on Kickstarter. It's an insult, actually. But, thousands of people will back it nonetheless, so good for them.

But, never have I thought when looking at a tripod (including travel ones) "Damn, all this wasted space is such a burden!" Don't get me wrong, it looks like a cool, smart design, but it doesn't really solve for anything. There are plenty of travel tripods at a fraction of the cost that pack away neatly.

Peak Design's build quality is very good, IMO, and I'm sure this tripod is no exception, but looking at the center column and ball head, it *looks* cheap and flimsy. It would bother me, I think, even if it never becomes a problem.

I think there is a place for travel tripods, but after many years of trying different tripods, the best and most used ones for me haven't been the smallest, lightest, and easiest to setup ones, it's the biggest and sturdiest ones. Specifically for travel, yes, I will bring the smallest and lightest, but these days, I've gotten away with not using a tripod at all for travel + landscape. Which goes back to the question: What does this very expensive tripod solve for? The answer for me is: Nothing.

I really think that for this amount of money, you should use it buying a "real" tripod. Spend as little as possible for travel tripods. They have a very specific use. But that's just me.

looks pretty inexpensive compared to RRS, however it does concern me as the center column and ball head do look flimsy. Also, those using L brackets wont like the design.

That said, being in the peak ecosystem is a real nice feature of this tripod. I've switched some of my arca gear back to manfrotto rc2 for the sake of peak compatibility. It's really nice being able to snap into clip and then tripod mount. Still has some limitations, but generally nice.

I like the PD products that I've used, but won't go for tripod. I generally like overly engineered products, especially if they are dangling 6-8K of equipment.

Here we go (sorry RS !) one of my pet peeves ! Please define 'Rock Solid'. Because I use crappy Chinese travel tripods that have NEVER let me down in the mountains or for travel (currently using Ingjue CK-228 959g).

The only instance I can think of where I have taken a far more robust tripod was on my trips to Iceland (massive waterfalls & so winds, streams and beaches). Even then none required 'a little more weight' than my standard tripod (Manfrotto 055CXPro4 1,700g - maybe this meets your criteria though).

BTW I use my tripods for everything from panoramas to milky way/night shots through to very long exposures (3-4 mins). Nary .... a ... problem.

Don't you just hate marketing spiel ?

'Packs down to half the size of a traditional travel tripod' : errr no it doesn't. In fact even packed down it's still longer, wider, larger and heavier (by 0.3 kgs, the Alu one is more than 0.6kgs heavier !) to the one I'm using now. Look at the size of that thing in the model's hand FFS !

The 'optimised for FF DSLRs and Telephoto lenses' is the big giveaway.

If I was only doing photo and didn't already have great legs I'd give them a try. However, looking at the tiny diameter of the center column (usually the biggest stability weakness of travel tripods) and the last leg sections, I would consider it light duty simply for traveling convenience. Until I can test one in person I'll pass on the kickstarter and stick with my Gitzo traveler. Only 1in bigger yet extends 4in higher. Actually, the only travel tripod I've used that will hold a heavy fluid head without wobbling. They also have a history of making decent and expensive tripods something PD is missing from their equation.

Take a look at the wobble on the PD:

I agree that PD is generally more style than substance with extra prettiness standing in to give the illusion of extra functionality or performance.

But I also agree that most of their stuff also functions well-enough for their purposes, though not necessarily much better than products of comparable or even half their price.

This tripod does look very well designed, and there are certainly some nice features to it. But "half the size of a traditional travel tripod"

C'mon!

I suppose an argument could be made that it appears, from this image, that the PD tripod is half the width of these other traditional tripods? But certainly not the length.

I bought my first PD bag recently. Stitching already coming apart, the strap design is terrible and the strap didn't work properly at all until they sent me out some add on bits. My CapturePro V2 wouldn't work on a backpack strap without buying add on screws. I've wanted a Clutch for a while but I don't think I want to spend any more money with them. They have too much style and too little experience. Hipster heaven (and at hipster prices!) but manufacturing know how and design based on real world use? I'm not seeing it. I really wouldn't buy a tripod from them. There's a whole lot of physics involved in good tripod design. Real engineering know how required, especially in the spider.

I have a PD5 bag and use their sling, but in my experience the weight of the tripod has always been my calculation, not the size. When strapped under or to the side of a bag, the profile hasn't really mattered to me.

It's a slick looking design, but I don't see how it could weigh much less than a comparable tripod, especially without compromising it's sturdiness.

I think the main problem for me is the locking mechanism is a ring, that is stacked directly on top of the ball head adjustment ring, and they both loosen in the same direction.

Edit: Also I don�t like that you can�t tilt the ballhead without raising the center column.
