I know this topic has been done before and I know there are people who are using the E-M1 with the newer IS version but the electronics for the older one are very different and it is not possible to focus it manually without power (focus-by-wire). I have seen the Metabones but have not tried it and it is ridiculously expensive. There are cheaper ones from a variety of manufacturers which are a quarter of the price. Has anyone tried them?

Check out the Viltrox EF-M1.

Thank you. I have seen that one and it's on the list to investigate.

Do you know if the old 300mm will do AF with it?

I also came across a Fotga for a similar price.

I want to stress that I already have a Metabones for my Sony A7R, courtesy of a voucher which came with the camera. Unfortunately, it doesn't AF but it will do MF and aperture.

Are there any links to reviews of such adaptors to M4/3? I have an old but near perfect Canon 400mm F5.6 which is super fast in acquiring AF on Canon bodies and very reluctant to let it go even after starting my migration to M4/3. I currently have a GX9 with a G9 coming soon. Just received my Panny 100-400 but quite untested due to the rain last few days.

The only thing I have seen is a simple claim from Viltrox that i works with Canon EF lenses. I guess it comes down to the signals that go through each terminal. The problem for me is that the old EF lens that I have requires power and I don't know which terminal/s that goes through and whether or not it makes any difference to their claim. I'm sure it's fine with anything more recent but I don't know about the earlier ones.

Either their claim is real and it covers all lenses or they're making false claims. I suppose I could write to them for clarification...

MFT Noob here. Looks like this thread is dormant this might help someone along the way.

I've shot mostly Canon for several years but recently caught a bug to try MFT. I'm in the most shallow end of the pool with an old E-m5 -- have a handful of Canon lens that I'm reluctant to part with so after some searching/reading I bought the Viltrox EF-M2 II. So far, it has lived up to it's billing. At least as far as AF. I'm not sure the M5 is reporting the correct exif info (aperture) but I've hung a Sigma 120-300, the Tamron 24-70 and a handful of Canon EF lens on it and all seem to focus accurately. Might be a little hunting and maybe a little spotty in low light. Otherwise all's well with the Viltrox adapter.

Good to know. My only experience is with a metabones adapter and a Canon 100-400L II. The focus is slow but accurate.

I own(ed) and used the EF 500mm 4.5L which is the same generation as the 300 you refer to along with the E-M1 and the focus by wire and aperture is flawless with the current Metabones adapter. Manual focus speed settings worked, presets work, aperture is incremental and IBIS reads focal length. That being said, it is useless on a GH5. I use a pair of E-M1 bodies and a GH5 regularly and the Metabones is fantastic with Sigma and Canon lenses of all generations on the E-M1 with autofocus and IBIS.

That's about the expected performance with an E-M5, I had one and shot quite extensively with 4/3rds lenses and the official adapter and that's pretty much the description of their performance (and this was with Imager AF lenses, so they officially supported CDAF).

One inconsistency I've found is a rough fit, between lens & converter, in some cases. One snugs up very nicely, another extremely tight. A Voltrix mfg tolerance variance? 'Possibly, I don't know....

Does the Viltrox EF-M2 II work with EFS or is it only EF lenses. I have some EFS lenses from my seldom used 60d and a Tamron 10-24 that I would like to try on my soon to be purchased g9.

Sorry, my last post was for you!

I am looking at getting a 120-300mm sigma and using the EF-M1 adapter on a GH5, can you confirm that it works ok in single shot, and what version of the sigma do you have? pre OS, OS, or OS SPORT? I am keen not to buy all these items and discover it wont AF

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am not sure why you are quoting me I clearly stated I only had the Canon 100-400L II. I think you want to ask the other poster above.

No problem. FWIW, I gave up on the Canon 100-400II after missing many, many shots. But, I shoot birds. In general, the lens was only good for perched shots. As soon as subjects were moving it did not fare well. I can't imaged that the Sigma 120-300 is going to focus any faster.

Thankfully this will be used for video mounted on the back wall of an auditorium for live streaming. I just need one shot to work, and it doesnt need to be perfect each time, so long as it can nail it eventually! Just better than manual focus if i need to change focus as wont need a ladder

I'll try.
I don't know which Oly your GH5 is comparable to so I'll start here:
The 120-300 I have is an older version -- probably 10yrs or more. I'm 2nd owner (it has that cool UofA Razorback logo on hood)
The combo will AF (subjective), slow & might not be as sharp as MF. Other lens may or may not be compatible. I've got some that work, some don't. None as fast and accurate as native IMHO.

After my intro to MFT via the Oly 5 I sprung for the M1 ii. Significant upgrade, both to camera and the AF situation.
Still, mixed returns on other lens. That said, It appears to do a pretty good job with the Canon fixed (85 f/1.8, 100 f/2.0)
I really don't use the 120-300 enough to justify owning it but you know how that goes :-)

I'm not as enamored with MFT as I was initially -- primarily because of low-light noise. I bought for the IBIS, light weight and silent shutter (great for shooting during worship service).

Hope this helps - let me know if you have other

Thanks very much! Does your lens have optical stabilisation? A USB port? (Trying to nail down which version it is) And from what I understand it works on your Olympus em5 and em1ii but the focus is not fast (which is fine for me) but accurate enough - might be back or front focused? Does it look sharp until you zoom in?

Thanks!
