I really miss those G9 colours... and the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Funny, but the one thing I don't like about m43 is the 4:3 aspect ratio. I would usually crop to 2:3 and frequently to 16:9.

I shoot a lot of vertical compositions, and those elongated aspect rations seldom look good in the tall orientation - so I usually end up cropping off 20-30% of my vertical images.

For landscape stuff, the wider aspect ratios are usually fine, but I often still prefer a slightly more square composition - depending on the subject matter of course.

Will be interesting to see how the new animal detect autofocus works for all the bird photographers here.

@Molson those are simply superb!

@Brandon Libby I can't begin to say how much I like and enjoy the G9. Best, most ergonomic and most versatile camera I have owned bar none. Just buy it if you have the funds but don't forget to pair it with good lenses

As far as the G9 colors go, this was something I had no idea bout when I bought the camera but they made some serious updates and changes to the G9 in color science and stills quality over the GH series. I first thought it was very much like a GH5 but with worse video and faster stills burst but there is so much more to the G9 than that. Compared to other cameras I have had the G9 is the first camera where I have shot more color than black and white and I, unlike @Bobbytan, am very partial to B&W

It will be very interesting to test the animal detect AF, I never expected them to add that to the current m43 cameras though I had hopes. I don't have the PL 200 so will see how well it works with tracking on the Oly 300 without DFD. It will never the less be very nice to have and it's quite awesome to see Panasonic being able to add it to "old tech" despite not having dual CPU's etc.

Obligatory cat photo... as you can see, the PL 200mm f2.8 is decently sharp wide open, even with the 2x TC attached.

I'm very interested in this as well... interested enough to consider jumping back into the m4/3 system again after selling my Sony A9 and 200-500mm zoom.

On a related note, I saw that Panasonic "fired" Dan Cox as a Lumix Ambassador, for having the audacity to try out a Sony A9 (and blog about it) recently. It's too bad, as I found his blogs to be very helpful when I was first considering getting a G9 early last year.

I am very curious as well. I am not partial to renting gear but I wouldn't mind renting the G9 with the updated software to try the animal and bird AI AF and especially it's BIF performance. For sure, it will be no match for the A9 but if it's far and away better than the E-M1X I would be seriously tempted to replace my E-M1 II with the G9.

It’s always a bummer to see someone fired due to their integrity and honesty. I understand Panasonic’s position, but also believe that ambassadors should be more than just yes men or fanboys. Their feedback and criticism (done properly) should be just as valuable as the exposure they hope for. Who knows, there could always be more to the story.

I am sure there is more to the story. His last action was probably the final straw.

A friend of mine who was an official Fuji X-Photographer got kicked out of the program for commenting on how he sometimes missed his Nikon D810... these ambassador programs seem to have no tolerance for people that are too impartial.

Well since I have the G9 I will report back as soon as I can, waiting for the 19:th as if it was X-mas!

I am mostly using it with Olympus lenses though, 300mm F4 and 40-150 for birds and such things so I will miss out on the DFD for this. Still, it might give an example of it and I am considering changing the 300 for the PL 200 instead. If I can get enough money from the 300 F4 that is.

As far as Dan Cox being let go as a Lumix ambassador I am not all that surprised. I was however surprised when I first read his BIF post a couple of weeks back. I can't remember how I found it but I do remember reacting to especially the "Moving forward with Olympus and Sony" statement and thought "Hmm is he no longer a Panasonic ambassador?"

I do love impartial reviews and people, as far as people can be impartial that is but I also understand that ambassadors, for whatever brand, can't be impartial. It would be like a race driver for Ferrari go out and say he doesn't believe in Ferrari for his kind of driving, testing a Porsche and making it official then expecting to go back and drive for Ferrari as if nothing has happened.

If you accept to become a brand ambassador, you either need to seriously believe in the product to 100% or at least accept its shortcomings enough to not care to talk about other products. It doesn't mean always saying 100% good things about the product (plenty of camera ambassadors have said some negative/constructive things about some cameras and still maintained their ambassador status) but it should mean that you don't talk about other products in a way that might make those outshine (in any way) the products from "your" company.

Getting kicked for saying one sometimes misses another camera is harsh but I do kind of get it. I don't have to like it though and in the end I think it hurts the company more than it helps them.

This could be the reason why Robin Wong and Olympus parted ways. I think Robin is a straight shooter and he will call a spade a spade. I believe he didn't get a lot of support from Olympus, possibly because he wasn't always singing high praises of Olympus gear. The parting was quite mutual though and Robin continues to review Olympus (and Panasonic) products.

Fuji insists that you use their products exclusively... but a lot of pros use gear from more than one brand if that's what they need to get the job done. It's no secret that they would rather sponsor brand-loyal hobbyists who have a social media following than actual working pros.

That would make a lot of sense and I understand them both. I do like the fact that he still does reviews on all types and brands he feels like.

I am sure they do!

And I must say I understand them and believe most other brands have the same rule and for good reasons. These are brand ambassadors meant to sell the product indirectly. The moment they accept becoming a brand ambassador they also accept the shortcomings with it, meaning using that brands products exclusively. There are all that many Fuji brand ambassadors who are aimed at wildlife for example, for good reasons, with only one long lens in the system it's not really the most interesting system for that.

Of course the camera makers, and others, would rather sponsor brand loyal youtubers with lots of subscribers. They want to sell their products. It isn't harder than that really and sponsoring a few youtubers with lenses and cameras on loan is so much cheaper, and more effective than normal classic add campaigns on the street or TV.

I think one should be careful believing all the ambassadors say. Some of them manage to walk a fine line though and not only say what is great but that which needs improvement as well. That line can easily be crossed when using other brands equipment though and in the case of Dan Cox with the post he made, almost stating that he would move forward with either Sony or Olympus, is well beyond that line. I respect him for it and it's a wise choice if that equipment does what he wants it to do but don't expect Panasonic to say "Cool, you go ahead and use that stuff and keep being our ambassador, maybe you can become a Sony ambassador as well?".

Like I said, I feel your friends kick out of Fuji for saying he sometimes misses his D810 is far harsher...
