I'm beginning to wonder if I really need the Bird Detect AI of my E-M1X. Panasonic's Animal AF seems to be pretty reliable even if it supposedly does not detect the subject's eyes...

A wind storm blowing down the Straight of Georgia past Entrance Island, earlier this week. The storm knocked over many trees on Gabriola Island, and we were left without power or internet service for nearly 24 hours.

I've had very much success with the G9 animal detect (mostly used with birds) as well as the S1R which uses the same system. I've sold the G9 but it worked very well with both Olympus lenses and Lumix lenses. It manages to track birds in flight well (find them, track them with the square) though the actual focus of them in flight isn't very accurate. For mostly still birds though, it is/was excellent.

I haven't tried DxO, but I've been curious about it. Now that the days are getting longer, I'm not having to shoot at those drastic ISO's all the time.

There is a free trail for DXO and I highly recommend it. Sometimes I use it for editing the entire image and sometimes I just apply image corrections and noise reduction then export it as a DNG to Capture One or Lightroom. I started using it when I bought it a month ago or so and it has revitalized some of my older shots.

Have you sold off all your M43 gear?

The only thing I sold was the Olympus E-M1 Mark III - I hated that camera almost as much as I love the E-M1X. Olympus should have kept all the controls the same on the two cameras.

DxO does seem to do a better job at the extreme ISO's, too... although I couldn't tell until I exported the JPEG files, as the previews still showed a lot more noise and banding.

Yes, more or less actually. I sold off all my modern m43 gear and gave an E-M5, E-M1 and 12-60 and the 45 F1.8 to my father.
This doesn't mean I have no intentions of getting m43 again but it depends on what happens. I had intentions of keeping the G9 and the 42,5 Nocticron if nothing else but after using the S1R I realized a few things. While the G9 and other m43 bodies are smaller for sure, they are not small enough to put in a pocket which means I will have them in a backpack or in a sling and at that point a little extra weight and size didn't matter to me. Also, I found that the S1R is everything I love about the G9 but in an even better body and with a better sensor. Knowing my self I understood that the G9 wouldn't get much use as it is now.
Also, selling the G9 and the Nocticron allowed me to get the Sigma 14-24 F2.8 and I've been wanting a super wide angle for several years now. One could say I made a trade from m43 with long reach to the S1R with super wide and normal reach instead.
But there is a lot to love about m43 and I am still looking and following to see what happens from both OM Digital and Panasonic. Of course, if I were to buy in to it again it would kind of "hurt" knowing what kind of system I had. On the other hand, I could also buy in to it much more effectively knowing exactly which lenses I want.

Yup that is one thing that is a downside. You have three options of noise reduction. Normal, prime and deep prime. Normal and prime shows up on the main photo but deep prime only shows up in the zoomed in display under the noise reduction window. Deep prime apparently works quite slow and so "deep" that it can't render the entire picture before exporting. Though if you use the little enlarged display it does give a good idea of how well it works.
How do you find it limited for editing otherwise? I do believe I agree with you even though really knowing why. Capture One and Lightroom both feel better and faster to edit in and I much prefer the highlight recovery and shadow boost in both those programs.
However, the local adjustments in DXO are superb thanks to the mark points which we first saw in Nikons raw converter in about 12-14 years ago.
Ps. There's a pretty bid difference in those two shots. DXO does a fantastic job at reducing noise and keeping detail at high ISO's. It's not nearly as much difference at lower ISO though. I bought DXO a while ago and even though I prefer C1 or LR for editing I can happily use DXO just for noise reduction.

Testing my new Olympus 100-400mm f5-6.3 zoom on the G9. This is not one of the PRO series lenses, so it doesn't feature Sync IS on the OM bodies, but my initial impression is that image stabilization with this lens is better on my G9 than on my E-M1X. Processed in DxO PureRAW, as LR's conversion produced far too much noise, even though the ISO used was only 800.

This is pretty impressive! I'm always so scared of shooting high ISO (G7 not G9). I should give this a try on some of my old images.
