p.1 #1 · The Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve

I don't usually get a chance to do too much landscape photography, much lest post anything here since the quality of landscape photos here is so intimidating. Be that as it may, I had a chance to go out to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve the other day and caught a few shots that you all might enjoy seeing,

It has been a few years since I went there, but it sure looks like this was a banner year for this spot. (The wildflowers have been — and continue to be — quite good throughout California this year.)

I wonder if the yellow/red might be just a bit hot in some of these images. I'd have to see them closer probably to tell, but it looks like the red channel may have saturated on some of them.

Take care,

Dan

Thank you so much, Mark! You're a terrific landscape photographer so your kind comment is much appreciated!

I read in your other posting about all the sad passings in your life just now. Please accept my deepest condolences. Several years ago when our precious son passed away suddenly, the kind words from my many friends here at FM were most appreciated. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

All best wishes,

Endre

Thank you, Dan! I'm happy that you like them

I worried about the saturation of the red and actually brought it down quite a bit just to bring it in line more with what I remember. The yellow/red doesn't look quite so hot on my screen at home so what you are seeing may be something of an anomaly.

All best wishes,

Endre

Thank you! I'm glad you like them. I do have several more I can post. I tried putting all of them into one post last night but I must have forgotten how to size them for FM so that one can do that. I was only able to upload three. I'll do another post shortly.

All best wishes,

Endre

I was on my laptop when I first read your reply so I put off replying until I could get to the calibrated monitor on my photography workstation.

They still seem a bit over-saturated to me. I'll admit that this might be a matter of interpretive discretion... and, in any case, it is a challenging issue since the poppies are naturally so saturated in the red (and) yellow colors and must pretty much be photographed in full sunlight.

I sometimes actually desaturate them selectively just a bit so that I can get the luminosity up to where I want it.

YMMV,

Dan

Thanks for the further commentary, Dan. It seems to be a very tricky problem to get the bright orange just right since the photos had to be taken at a time of day when most good photographers are taking a siesta. I did exactly what you describe below - desaturate a little and then boost the luminosity - so, maybe, it just comes down to our individual subjective experience of the color that we see. There are a few areas there the red still might look a bit hot to me and I worked on them some more to selectively get them to look better but I am loathe to mess with them too much lest they lose their spark. Thanks, again!

All best wishes,

Endre
