Same boat, have the FE 85, no rush. Also have the SY 35, 50, real nice lenses.

Fred you going to compare anything against this. I will at least use my 50 on BB just for resolution comparison. I want to compare color,saturation and contrast as well. Feels maybe a little flat but I did not have any real sunshine today.

I know it's hard to believe but the Samy 85/1.4 is my only 85mm lens at the moment! I won't be doing much testing with it and I already know it's a keeper for me.

I was going to go with 24GM 50 1.4 and the new 135. Seeing this made me reconsider to get 24GM and 85 Samy only. Will be ridiculously cheaper to do so. Could get 2nd body(trying to make the move from Fuji to Sony)(mainly shooting events, kids, portraits, weddings etc)
Hopefully someone does comparison to the GM, that will probably seal the deal. Unfortunately as Fred say I’m little concerned about Samy long run usage, but is not an expensive bullet to bite anyway.

Unfortunately (or I guess now fortunately) I sold me 85FE prior to getting my Samyang on Friday. But right out of the gate I can assure you the rendering of the 1.4 is a big improvement. I was also not expecting it to be as sharp as it is at 1.4. Very pleased and in my opinion is a no brainier for 100 more than the 1.8. It is surprisingly light feeling as well. Don't think I'll miss the focus hold button either with the new update on the riii installed.

Yes no question this has much nicer rendering and look over the Sony 1,8 and I would say even over the Batis 1.8 as well. I’m also surprised it is as sharp as it is. Not sure it will beat the GM in rendering but it seems pretty close. I have not shot the GM in awhile so I will refrain from too much comment on that comparison. I will miss the AF/MF switch and focus hold button. I use that for focus area instead.
Focus hold for me is just let go of the back focus button. I did put focus area in Fn and same with Af/MF toggle. I may put the AF/MF toggle back on a custom button though

I've shot with a great copy of the 85/1.4 GM for many years and even without testing them side by side, I can say with confidence that the Samyang is noticeably sharper and contrasty wide open due to slightly better SA correction. (It's still under corrected though)
The GM wins on optical vignetting and therefore specular highlights look rounder off-axis (away from center). The Samyang's bokeh balls shape improves greatly at f/1.6 or f/1.8 in this regard. (but start to look like polygons)
I'm still impressed by how light the Samyang 85/1.4 is. It balances very nicely on the A7RIII.
The 85/1.4 GM has better flare resistance (similar veiling but better ghosting resistance), has slightly smoother rendering (SA bokeh) and has rounder bokeh balls off axis (less cat-eye shape) while still maintaining circular shape when stopped down. (11-blade aperture)

Thanks Fred for throwing me some some reasons to keep the heavier and much more expensive 85GM.
These reasons sound much more compelling than my OCD desire to keep my lenses the same in terms of having the same focus hold button, aperture ring switches! 🙄😉😁

Wow this lens is damn good. Real quick thoughts on BB and infinity the corners are awesome at F4 with f5.6 being really stinking picky. Im leaning on F1.8 being my favorite. CA is gone, Its very sharp on center and bokeh balls look the best. The biggest issue is color. Its coming into C1 at 6300 kelvin. This is my happy spot at about 5600. Thats a big swing but need to get a color checker out there . I was out really earlier too
