p.1 #1 · Sony removes support for GPS tagging...

So after having some issues with the GPS geotagging (via a smart phone) feature of the A6400 and A7r3, I emailed Sony and got this response:

"received you email enquiry regarding the issue with the location information with Imaging Edge. I wish to inform you that as of February 14, 2019 any Map associated function will no longer be available anymore on both Playmemories Home, Imaging Edge Mobile 7.0 and Imaging edge PC."

Just mentioning it here for anyone who is struggling with it

Thanks for the note! I spent a few minutes yesterday trying to get this to work again but gave it up to troubleshoot at a later time. Now I know I won’t have to!

Disappointing though, as I did enjoy that feature, particularly while traveling.

I'm confused. That's the only thing I use the Playmemories/Imaging Edge software for. And I have photos from my a7rIII taken on 3/31/2019 that have location info in LR from the iPhone app...

Assuming this isn't a late April Fool's joke, the response from Sony makes absolutely no sense given that the new app, which was released a week or 2 ago (well after February 14) still has the GPS pairing capability.

I will say that I had to delete the link in my camera and start from new when I updated to the new Mobile Edge version as it wasn't working until I did that.

Actually seems to be more stable on iPhone than the prior software

Perhaps future firmware will provide geotagging, much like with the A9.

This did the trick for me. Thanks! I deleted the app, reinstalled, and re-linked the camera from scratch and then it started working again. Glad to have this feature working as intended.

Play Memories Home had a feature allowing you to visually geotag photos with a map. That's the feature that's discontinued. I really liked that feature because there are many times when I don't properly try to sync my camera with the phone to geotag the photos automatically. Is there other software that you can geotag visually with?

You can visually geotag in Lightroom - just open map view, make sure the film strip is showing at the bottom and then drag pictures onto the desired location on the map and they will be geotagged.

on the Mac you can use HoudahGeo. It has been an excellent app for Geotagging

https://www.houdah.com/houdahGeo/

It lets you tag RAW files, TIF, JPG, etc

you select a location, update metadata, and tag multiple files from a map location

I used it for old film scans, and digital camera pics with no tagging. Really like ability to tag RAW files.

You can update the RAW file GPS data directly. There is no need for a side-car file, or external database to store GPS data.

Well I suspect that Sony support don't know what they are talking about, and I have sent a followup message asking for clarification. Will report back

I too could not get my a9 that was previously linked to PlayMemories to connect via Bluetooth for location tagging after the app and firmware update.

I deleted the linked camera list in the app and re-paired and now it works fine again.

Sounds awesome. Too bad I use a Windows machine.

Doesn’t seem to be different from what is already in Lightroom. Any idea?

Many people do not use lightroom

HoudahGeo writes directly to the RAW file, no sidecar or Lightroom database needed to store the GPS data

I have found the GPS location tagging to be reliable with the Sony A7 III
It easily syncs the camera to the Imaging Edge moble app

On the Iphone go to settings, Imaging Edge Mobile, set "Location" to always.
I suspect the Android version has the same option

The Imaging Edge Mobile app will pick up the camera automatically when I turn the camera on
the most I ever have to do is cycle the "Location Information Linkage" slider off to on

My experience is that it is useless in practice. On the off time you actually get it connected, it just stops working as soon as the phone screen goes off. I am guessing that my particular phone (I have a oneplus 6) has some glitches WRT its power saving and location services.

Sony needs a flash shoe GPS unit like Canon makes
