Fred, if you get a chance to test their sharpness at near MFD, I would be much obliged. I know the infinity test is more important to get done, but I'm curious about their MFD behavior also.
The Sigma looks tremendous. Didn't expect them to be nearly indistinguishable.
I wonder if the Sigma and GM are going to be *this* close using sensors in the current size range (something like 43-50MP), where the GM may really outshine the Art with something like future 60-100MP sensors.
The 1:1 crop below shows the Sony noticeably sharper. I can even see the difference in sharpness between the two lenses in the viewfinder when manual focusing at 12x magnification.
It looks like the Sony has slightly smoother foreground bokeh while the Sigma has slightly smoother background bokeh.
This indicates that Sony has stronger spherical aberration correction in comparison.
I'm analyzing these images at 1:2 and 1:1 mag. and although there is a difference and the Sigma is indeed less corrected for SA, the overall rendering and look between these two lenses is very similar. Perhaps a bigger difference will be seen against the 85/1.4 GM.
The 135 GM is sharper than the Sigma but the latter is no slouch. Their CA correction is also similar. (Hint: very low LoCA)

Same exposure (Manual), same focus, same processing (LR default) and same aperture. Which rendering do you prefer best.
Which one is the GM 135/1.8? A or B?
I couldn’t tell which is which (I just peeked at the answer )There also wasn’t anything that would trigger a strong preference. Some bokeh was smoother in the Sigma but not anything dramatic. On the other hand, I had the impression that it also has more LoCA (look at the texture in the chair, there is a more pronounced regular greenish pattern in the OOF area). Again, not anything dramatic.

We need a reference too, I have no experience with any of the 135’s. Something well known and very double vision like a vintage sharp Planar.
