Sizing looks pretty dope for a 2.8?

I'm half hoping this lens will be amazing and get it, but also half hoping that a lot of people jump ship, and a 16-35 or 20 go for sale someday. I'm thinking I'll value the extra length of the existing f4 more than the speed of the new tammy.. guess there's some time to mull it over !

If it’s as good as the 28-75 f/2.8 then I’m buying this.

If it's $850 or so I am going to be very tempted to sell my 16-35GM and buy this and a used Loxia 21 with no cash out of pocket.

This looks very promising! The size is great. I'm looking forward to the reviews. I just hope the flare resistance is better than the 28-75. That is really my only serious gripe with that lens, but I think it would bug me significantly more on a wide zoom. I'm really glad that Tamron is providing alternatives for those of us that can't justify GM lens prices, and I'm excited to see what kind of telephoto zooms they develop as well.

I think Tamron is doing this right. They are limiting the range while still providing fast zooms with high IQ in a light package.

hmm, was hoping I'd want this. But for me I'd prefer the crossover to 35mm, in hope of leaving the mid range zoom at hope more and carrying a longer prime.

The size is super appealing, and assuming the cost will be reasonable. Wishing there was a MF clutch.

I matched the throat diameter to the Tamron 28-75 in PS to come up with this approximate comparison in size. The diameter of the barrel looks to be exactly the same between these two, 73mm. For comparison's sake the Sony 16-35/4 is 98.5mm long by 78mm wide, so the Tamron is almost identical. Since the Sony is metal, I'd guess the Tamron will weigh less though (probably <500g).

Yeah, I was also hoping for 35mm on the long end, something like 18-35mm, but I have no idea how that would have impacted the design.

I think I prefer good 2.8/28 (if this is the case here?!) over bad 4/35 of the 4/16-35.

I will place a preorder on that lens.

A mirrorless design for a short flange distance allows lenses to be smaller at the wider range but once FL reaches 35mm, mirrorless designs starts to lose the benefit of being more compact.
I predict that just like with any other zoom, the 28mm FL won't be as good as the others in the range. It could perform very well at 21mm compared to the CV 21 or even the Loxia 21/2.8.

Rendering is another story and I personally dislike the popular 28-75/2.8 for this reason alone. This is very subjective though.

Well, I really should’ve listed my 16-35 ZA for sale last week. This is a bummer for me

Very nice indeed. I got the 12-24 when I put my kit together, and almost instantly regretted it just for the lack of filters...didn't think I'd need em but it turns out I did. I use it from time to time when I want to go superwide, but in the back of my mind I've been thinking of picking up a 16-35 f4. This might be an even better option. Hopefully it's priced around $800. If so it'll be on my list once early reviews hit and any bugs are worked out.

Hmm, if this is the truth I think I will be on-board. Hadnt done the research on the 16-35 yet.

I think my issue is hating the 28 being the crux of two lenses, I spent most my last trip shooting 28mm on the 28-75. So in theory I would imagine being on the edge of these two very often. This probably says something about my style though and maybe I should just pick up a 28mm prime (or the sony 24-105 with the 12-24).

I think someone mentioned an estimate of 93mm length, and we know the filter size of 67mm. That basically matches the 24-70 f4 in size

The 16-35GM is not large at all, it's a nice size, however the Tamron will be a good bit smaller, approximately the size of the 24-70 f4. I hope it can match the weight as well, anywhere in the 400's would be amazing.

I think your right. I was going to pull the trigger on an wide angle lens either the batis 18 or one of the 16-35 but now I'm definitely purchasing the tamron as I got 24 mm and up covered and was really looking for something in that 16-20 mm range. I've noticed all the wide angle lenses plummeting in price on the b&s board with the introduction of the voigtlander 21 and now im sure this tamron. I've seen loxia 21 needed to be listed under 900$ just to make it attractive enough to sell. Good times to need some lenses in Sony land!

I think lenses like the Batis 18, Firin 20 will start taking a hit. I do think though it won’t effect MF glass because I feel the folks that pick MF do so because they prefer MF glass. I know I do

Than you got zooms like the 16-35 both flavors and maybe even some 12-24s. Lots of 24 cross over focal lengths here as well. I count at least 5 zooms with 24mm.

Interesting to see what this does. If your not looking for the absolute best and save a few bucks plus get a nice range this could very well sell very nice.

Be interesting to see who buys it more the A7III folks or A7rIII. Kind of diffrent types of shooters.

Im not so sure it will hurt the 24 1.4 though

Be fun to see the data on all this somehow but impossible to collect it.

This may replace the 28/2 and its 21/2.8 converter for me for astro. While the 28/2 is a nice size, the 17-28 seems small enough and fast enough to compete.

Not sure if it will replace my16-35/4, which has a nice range and very good image quality.

In the end, it will depend on the image quality and price, of course.
