hiepphotog, I looked at my test shots at 17/2.8 last night and I don't think mine shows that level of softness at infinity anywhere across the frame (I assume the left is f8 and right is f2.8?).
I don't have a 24GM, but it probably just comes down to whether you value the flexibility in focal range compared to f1.4 and better IQ towards the edges at wider apertures. In my test shots, the Tamron pretty much matched my CV15 and handily beat the 28/2. I like these two lenses a lot, but the Tamron will replace both of them in my bag. The Tamron has prime-like sharpness in the center and across a good portion of the frame from wide open. Like hiepphotog said, the longer end in the corners is where the Tamron is the weakest. In practical usage though, at 28mm I'm capturing centered subjects (like people) at f2.8 where corners are out of focus, or I'll stop down to f5.6+ which cleans up the corners a lot. Harder choice for the 24GM though; that lens is pretty special. It's probably worth it to stick with the GM if you use it a lot for astro and don't shoot much wider than 24mm (or find an alternative).
Here are a couple of shots I took this weekend amidst the redwoods:

Both crops were at WO, but I panned from side to side to get the same subject at different parts of the image so one can easily the dip. If it's possible, would you be able to do the same just so I know for sure I need to return this lens or not? I checked the review on Phillip Reeves and I believe his copy showed similar dip (though might not be as severe cause maybe I did a 300% zoom). Such a pity since this lens is well centered at 17mm and 28mm.
