I sold my Sony 16-35/4 for the Tamron, no regrets at all. Narrower zoom range is worth the trade for f2.8 vs. f4 for me. Size and weight is a win for the Tamron, the biggest difference having a non-zooming barrel and being ~20% lighter. I always worried about the paint scratching on my Sony as well; I prefer the more durable and lighter plastic in the Tamron.

Sunstars are subjective, but I always disliked the sunstars produced by the Sony due to their asymmetrical look. The Tamron sunstars have nice even and pointed rays starting at f11-ish, more faint/unobtrusive at that aperture and gradually increasing in contrast to f22.

The bar for a 70-200 or 75-150 f2.8, has to be 1KG or less to be compelling, Tamron set the bar too high. if it's 1500g or so, I'll simply adapt for the rest of time, just not a high priority lens for me.

It'll also need better bokeh, at least for my needs. On the wide angle end the bokeh rendering is much less important, but on the 28-75 the bokeh is often very very busy at the long end and that's something that would really put me off in a potential 75-150/200 if it shared that quality.

Finally got to take it out, and it's a nice lens, seems stronger on the wide end, and seems as long as I'm stable, I can get pretty sharp shots. Between the wind and waves hitting my tripod, I had a lot of unstable moments and ruined shots.

Got my 17-28 today and since I didn't have time to go anywhere worthy of a wide angle lens I decided to test centering... which I don't usually do for just this reason If it doesn't bother me in normal use it's fine. But now that I've seen it, the bottom right corner seems pretty abysmal and I can't unsee it.

Question is, bad enough to return or should I keep the copy? The more I look at it, the worse it seems

Edit: Hmm, I focused the lens with the object in the top left corner (the one that looks best), now that I think about it that was probably a mistake since it's the best corner and maybe focusing in the center would handicap all corners more evenly.

Nice test, Oakland Mormon temple. I'm in that neck of the woods as well. Did you end up exchanging it? Is that f2.8 or stopped down? The corners at 28mm are definitely the weakest part of the range as well for me, but I didn't see much decentering on mine, which it seems like yours has a bit in the lower half. Mine looked pretty decent stopped down to f8. I think Fred said before though, it's pretty common for a zoom to be decentered somewhere throughout the range.

I took the Tamron out for some shooting this weekend, and the autofocus behavior felt less consistent than a Sony lens on my A7rII. I was walking through a forest, so low light, and trying to capture shots of people with me (wide open) or the scenery (stopped down). The AF kept doing a lot of hunting/pumping if I was in AF-C mode while trying to shoot stopped down. Switching to AF-S mode seemed better, but then capturing shots of moving people become more challenging. I need to do some side-by-side testing to see if I can determine what the difference is. Maybe the newer camera models work better... do I need to upgrade to the A7rIV?

Overall image quality and feel of this lens have been great though. Very pleased.

Just got this lens. I have a well centered copy. However, I noticed quite a great mid-zone dip at 17mm WO. I'm not sure this copy is any good for a wide field astro shot. Stopped it down to f/8 even things out.

Now that people have this lens in hand... what's the comparison to the 24 1.4 GM? I've got the 24 GM (it's the widest lens I own) and I like it... but I don't think I'm using it that much. At this point, it's mainly for astrophotography and my default "walking around" lens if I don't really know where I'm going. It's odd... when I used Fuji I had the 16 1.4 and it was my favorite lens by far. But now that I have a similar lens on Sony, I don't use it that much.

I'm thinking that maybe this Tamron might be a better fit for me and give a little more versatility.

Anyone made that switch?

It's no prime quality, that's for sure, especially toward the longer end. The Tamron has nothing over the GM 24 except the zoom range and cheaper. I no longer have my G 12-24, but I believe that lens is sharper than this one. I'm going to keep this zoom for now cause it can use screw-on filters, until there is a GM/Loxia/CV/Sigma fast UWA.

hiepphotog, I looked at my test shots at 17/2.8 last night and I don't think mine shows that level of softness at infinity anywhere across the frame (I assume the left is f8 and right is f2.8?).

I don't have a 24GM, but it probably just comes down to whether you value the flexibility in focal range compared to f1.4 and better IQ towards the edges at wider apertures. In my test shots, the Tamron pretty much matched my CV15 and handily beat the 28/2. I like these two lenses a lot, but the Tamron will replace both of them in my bag. The Tamron has prime-like sharpness in the center and across a good portion of the frame from wide open. Like hiepphotog said, the longer end in the corners is where the Tamron is the weakest. In practical usage though, at 28mm I'm capturing centered subjects (like people) at f2.8 where corners are out of focus, or I'll stop down to f5.6+ which cleans up the corners a lot. Harder choice for the 24GM though; that lens is pretty special. It's probably worth it to stick with the GM if you use it a lot for astro and don't shoot much wider than 24mm (or find an alternative).

Here are a couple of shots I took this weekend amidst the redwoods:

Both crops were at WO, but I panned from side to side to get the same subject at different parts of the image so one can easily the dip. If it's possible, would you be able to do the same just so I know for sure I need to return this lens or not? I checked the review on Phillip Reeves and I believe his copy showed similar dip (though might not be as severe cause maybe I did a 300% zoom). Such a pity since this lens is well centered at 17mm and 28mm.

Too bad the scene was photographed under such difficult lighting condition. LDS temple is out of focus. Personally I don't think one can draw any meaningful conclusion from these photos. Try morning light instead.

Yes, followed by MB the other day. I had dropped the lens, and smashed the front filter at the Acquarium in LB, so Had to properly test if this thing still works...... plastic build has its advantages

This has been a really fun walk-around lens so far. Not sure if mobile upload kills the quality

This is the same dilemma I went through. On the Sony 6500, I only used the 16 1.4 and when i moved to full frame, i bought the Sony 24 f1.4 and to be honest i haven't used it all too much either. I think i much prefer using zooms when traveling since it's more versatile. That's why i also picked up the tamron 17-28 as well to complement my 28-75. Overall, I've been grabbing the 17-28 more over the 24 due to its versatility.

Unless you know exactly what you’ll be shooting, versatility is always better.

I also own the 24GM and was asking the same question to myself when this lens came out. After consideration, I would not give up the absolute quality of the 24GM for this lens, even though it is more flexible. Being able to shoot at f1.4 gives you flexibility in another way. And since the 24mm can double as a 35/2 in crop mode on an A7R3 (with beautiful rendering much like the Sonnar 35 on the RX1RII), it's even more versatile. I just wouldn't trade in the quality of the 24GM for the focal length flexibility of the Tamron zoom. It's good to have the choice, though, for those who really need the zoom.

The 24GM is really bad at 17mm though.
