"Philadelphia Sunrise" is one of my favorite images of 2018. Mom and T4 had just mated on the general's hat and were enjoying a few minutes of post-coital bliss. The sun had just risen over the Center City skyline in the east, lighting up City Hall. Then this image formed in my head. But would they stay put long enough for me to run from the foot of the memorial on Eakins Oval across the Parkway (in rush hour traffic) and halfway up the art museum steps to get the shot?
(It's situations like these where ridiculous physical fitness - 100-200 miles of road cycling/week - makes all the difference: all-out sprint, followed by shooting between heart beats, as in biathlon.)

Slim pickings for me this year. I guess this would be my favorite only because it's a bird I'd never seen before anywhere and I just happened to be in the backyard already set up when it stopped by. Never saw it again.
And in that same vein, here's another shot that is one of my favorites for the same type of reason. Living in Western New York all my life, 62 years, spotting an eagle was an extremely rare occurrence. The first one I ever saw was probably about 10 years ago. About 6-7 years ago, a nesting pair started to show up on a large man-made pond in a tiny hamlet about 5 miles from my house. I know the family that owns the property so I do stop up there from time to time. About 2 years ago a female was found wounded in the woods by a snowmobiler. He attempted to save the bird but she was too far gone. Seeing a thriving juvenile is a very encouraging sign that these majestic birds are truly making an aggressive comeback. ...Show more →

Thanks Ted for getting the ball rolling...your little blue is outrageously good!! This has been a good year and as a result I have a big problem deciding what to post. I'll give the second image some thought and come back later.
