I would like to share some images of short-eared owls. All these images were taken earlier this week with the Nikon D850 and the Nikon 800mm f/5.6 lens. Two years ago, I had similar outings, using the Nikon D5 and the Nikon D500. I was very pleased that the autofocus of the D850 appeared to do just as well as the D5 (out of over 600 images, only about a dozen images were out of focus). What a great camera the Nikon D850 has turned out to be! At any rate, please enjoy the beauty of the short-eared owl. Comments and feed-back are most certainly welcome!

It is hard to pick a favorite image, they all are wonderful but if you would twist my arm I would say that #2 is my favorite.

Mike, thanks! Actually, there were three or four shorties in the fields where I shot these. Their numbers vary from year to year (this seems to be a good year). The hardest part is avoiding the hunters that also use these fields, although hunting season will be over in late January.

Chris, thanks! These were taken at the Samish flats (not Leque Island). In talking to someone who frequents this area, it seems like this year is pretty good (better than last year, but not quite as good as two years ago). If you head up this way, take care not to park in the two small areas reserved for hunters (there are signs). Hunting dollars were used to improve this area, and we don't want photographer access rights restricted (i.e., let's get along with the hunters).

Morris, thanks! I did apply noise reduction. There is some room for improvement (e.g., image 3), however!

Super set Keith. 15 and 16 are my top pics.
I agree with Morris that some could use more noise reduction.
The D850 is an excellent camera; however, it doesn't have near the speed and ISO ability of the D5.
