Thanks Jim. All of my shots are handheld in this post. Try the 2x out. It does well. Flight is not fun with it. I am currently in Florida not for just birding but managing some time. I only have the 400mm DO with me, the 1.4x is great for flight but many misses with the 2x for flight. However for stationary subjects it does a pretty good job.

Rob, were your original shots on tripod or handheld?
I use my 400 DO II nearly all the time with a 1.4x III TC on my 1DX II. Easy hand holding at 560mm for both stationary and in-flight shots. I rarely reach for my 500 II anymore.
I have yet to use my 2x III TC with it, but it looks like I need to give it a try!
