Great, thanks a lot for the testing! I am happy too, 21, 40 and 65, all very different, but always with personality and (positive) surprise factor! Lets wait for the 110

Was this at infinity? If so, I'm starting to believe this lens may do better at mid-field than my test demonstrated. I should have another copy on Friday to confirm this. Perhaps the mid-field focal plane is very slight further than the hard stop of my current copy.
I am curious to see what Guy's infinity test shows.
Only the center part of the frame was at infinity , the rest was at 50 feet or so.

Yeah, we need some additional infinity tests - I suspect field curvature in the corners allows them to be much better closer in, especially when you can't focus past infinity just slightly.
Unfortunately (maybe) for me I need super clean borders and OK corners at f/5.6 and my copy just wasn't there.

So here i did shoot a infinity shot. This is wide open so do expect it to get soft a little towards the edges. What I cant explain in the area in the circle. It gets only a little better stopping down But i do remember this before with other lenses. I cant explain it
Far right than Far left than Center
I am on a angle here so watch that. Im focused on that center building

Now mid right and mid left. Thee areas sharpen up fine when you get to 5.6 so thats not a issue. Whats weird is the far left the branches in the foreground are sharp and focus is past that

Why I did not post this earlier , I dont like this spot for this wide a lens. So ignore it and lets see what Fred gets Friday as his location is perfect for infinity. Ive been there myself and its a great spot. I will have to find something better.

Guy, your copy has very very acceptable performance wide open.
It's the not appreciably getting better stopping down that is a mystery . . . .
No I understand that John as it does get better. I just cant explain that weird area at all. And yes you had a bad copy no question in my mind.
On Big Bronco across the frame looks far better but thats at 50 ft. So im still a little iffy on infinity

Hi Guy,
Is is possible that the lens just can't resolve the detail as in the circled area? I think that I remember seeing that same situation with some conifers at some distance away with some of my lenses. I am not sure if those conifers in the circled area are Junipers or something like a pine but that could be an issue. Also, you are sure that the shutter speed is that high and none of the trees have moved due to wind.

Rich
Rich you make a interesting point as I remember this area before and the bush there is very dense and not like the normal desert around it so maybe it cant resolve it. I would certainly not rule that out and in fact maybe think your on the money here. I mean i cant for the life of me explain it. But i have seen it before testing other lenses

I've been following this and the CV 40 threads with interest, and I'm now patiently waiting for the 40 to catch up on production.
My question is: were people *expecting* these lenses to be this good? As an intermediate to advanced hobbyist, having lenses that of this high a quality, at these prices, are borderline unbelievable.

Well Cosina have made some real winners lately so not totally surprised but I did not think this 21 would compare this well against the Loxia 21 and 25. I think if your out looking at 21 mm lenses which would be CV, Loxia , Tokina Firin 20mm and even throw in the Batis 18 plus zooms than given what we are seeing it’s worth considering no question. I happen to like CV lenses mechanically with knurled focus rings and aperture rings out front. I have the 15,21,50 and thinking about the 35 classic for my travel kit.

Should be noted here as not to confuse anyone. A lot of members here including myself have full AF lenses as well for there kits when in that type of shooting mode. Hobbyists fall into several categories from having a very basic kit than run the gamut to having far more lenses than someone like myself that’s a working Pro. It really depends on where one might be in photography experience for lack of a better word. Some folks may completely ignore MF lenses but than you get folks that’s all they shoot to the combination crowd. As a Pro I love the enthusiasm of the hobbyist crowd, I really do. I think it’s awesome folks are out creating ART, producing amazing images and making their life outside of real work more fun. My hobby is Golf and I’m addicted too.

I'm glad that CV is tackling this niche, very much like the SEM line from Leica. Exciting time for building a small travel lens collection. Next year project
