Great osprey/fish shot Alex. Good work on keeping this image thread going. I think we have to call on @mitesh as I know he has one of these lenses lying around somewhere and should contribute to this thread.
I would appreciate if you'd provide EXIF with your images....I'm always curious which ones have TCs on them or not.
Keep up the good work!!
This is the only thread I can find that is testing the 400/2.8. Unfortunately it went inactive a few weeks ago. I hope there will be some more posts from owners of the lens that provides some test results, preferably some controlled tests of the A9+400/2.8 and A7R3+400/2.8 with the 1.4X and 2X TC that tests the optical quality, AF speed and AF tracking.
Much what is in the thread now show some impressive images of stationary subjects but metadata is lacking for many of them so it is not clear how they were captured. The images of moving subjects look good but some look a bit soft, although with the low res images that the site permits it is difficult to judge how well focused the images may be. It would be good to see more images where the metadata is available and maybe full res crops showing optical performance and how well focus is achieved. Also there have been some firmware updates that were supposed to improve performance of the 400/2.8. Did that make any difference?
I am contemplating purchase of the lens (it's a lot of $$!!) and plan to use it with the 1.4X or 2X TC for moving subjects most of the time. Although there are not many owners of the lens I am hoping this thread can be revived and we will see more test images.

Back from Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Texas Gulf coast. It is the Winter home of the only natural wild flock of whooping cranes which nest in Wood Buffalo National Park in the Northwest Territories of Canada and migrate here in starting in October. By December, all or nearly all have reached the marshes in and around Aransas where they feed on blue crabs, wolfberries, crayfish, frogs, large insects and acorns roasted during the prescribed burns. Most will be in family groups but these were a group of 6 sub-adults that are learning to vocalize and establishing dominance to attract a mate.
Best approached from a boat on the water this was shot with an A9 and now favorite 400 2.8 lens and 2x giving 800mm and on a tripod. Very happy with this combo!
