No need to go further. So Ill move on to the center tests but from memory the new FE version will beat the VM version. Reason I sold the VM was i wanted the FE version as i will use this more as a travel , landscape , in Guys personal kit lens.
Now these are not cheap Sony is about 500 more I think . But if you want the absolute best AF 50 1.4 than you would be hard pressed too find better. Im just pointing out the facts. I tested this Sony 50 against some of the best lenses around in same types of focal lengths. Its a sweetheart no question
I can say I'm very happy I did get the FE version of the CV 50 so that was a good call on my part
Just remember anything I say on these tests is based on visual facts that can be seen. I have no bias. Persoanally I go by facts and not hear say without proof. Big Bronco is a tough test to pass
I screwed up and need Fred’s help . I put the test split up on two different threads.
I’m terrible sorry folks I meant to put the test on the 7 Lens Big Bronco test but I put it in two threads. Would not mind it in both threads. I stop before going further until Fred can help me
Thanks, Fred. And good luck finding this kind of nuanced commentary anywhere else.

I highly recommend the CV 50/1.2 E-mount with a Sony body. I'm sure a PCX will tame the induced field curvature for the VM version but it will not match the FE's performance off-axis.
@GMPhotography can the difference in coverage here be attributed to your crops or that this test was done hand-held? If not, the difference in actual angle of view between the two is quite pronounced.

I am NOT handheld at all. Worst case it may have rotated slightly when switching lenses but i was locked down pretty well and even if you did line it up visually the CV is wider
Very similar at 1.4 but at 1.8 the Sony pulls ahead. This has been well documented on this forum the Sony starts the magic at 1.8 as does the 85mm GM at 1.8
Again no movement between lenses the CV 50 seems to be wider. Im locked down on tripod always on these tests Remember the CV 50 has no lens profile but if i did not mark these not sure on a overall you could tell the difference. Honestly my opinion. Pick your poison. Obviously the Sony 50 1.4 is a best in class lens and has AF and superb manual focus . But its far bigger and heavier not to mention it cost more.
Question of the day if asked the FE version or the VM version on a Sony sensor the FE version has the advantage . No question.
I know I must insane to own both. I love them both to be honest
Not sure what to say here . If these 2 50mm dont impress you on IQ than quit and retire.
Honestly I have them both and you could pick either one and not make a mistake. I guess if you look at the value or most versatile than the Sony 50 may service one better. It has not the fastest AF but it does have it and it’s manual focus is outstanding. Obviously other factors as well for it and against it. But for me having the 24/135 on either side of it is a total win.

Sounds like a nice alternative for those who passed on the 40 because of onions. Now I need a nice native manual 28mm to pair with it. Any manufacturers reading this?
Here's a quick test of my CV 50 FE mount (top) compared to my FE55 (bottom) extreme right edge 100% crop at f/5.6 no post processing. They are indistinguishable to me or so close, it's not worth worrying about. And, I think the FE55 is among the sharpest lenses I’ve ever owned.
