Hi, Joakim,

How you like the 50mm S? I finally decide to order 50mm f1.8S. I have to try another native S mount lens. It should be here before Christmas. Based on Samples so far, I feel I should like it but I really need to use it for a while to decide if it is for me.

So far, after get Z7, I find my preference for F lenses changed a little. I like 58G more than before. One is size and weight, another is more reliable AF at wide aperture now. The rendering is always special on the lens, but as any smooth bokeh glass, it need right combination of condition to make the images really shine than boring.

Well talk about 58mm but share some 300mm PF samples, a few random life moments. I absolutely love this 300mm lens.

Gorgeous portraits! I have never really ventured down this road but having a little boy 6 months old, I have just started tinkering. As you know I love your editing style as well, really beautiful work.

Has anyone seen the performance of the Zeiss ZM 18 f/4 on the Z7? I think this is a very interesting lens and a good price/performance value. It would be great if it works on the Z7. It had a lot of color fringing and some smearing on the Sony cameras.

I haven't had time to use it that much yet but so far so good. Wide open performance looks very good and I like the bokeh and the rendering in general. It's soon time for the Christmas break and hopefully I'll have much more time to use it then.

Unfortunately the corners were pretty bad with the ZM 18 f/4 when I tested it quickly earlier.

Thanks for the information, even if it is disappointing.

Costurero de la Reina by Felipe Rodriguez, on Flickr

Hi!

At last I figured it out how to embed pictures hosted on Flickr!

This sample was taken with the Noctilux 0.95 on the Z7. Cheap Chinese adapter (waiting for a helicoidal one to be released). Diaphragm at f2. It's a landmark on my hometown (Seville, Spain).

Sorry for the watermark, I had no other version at this time!

Nothing crazy but just more a test shot using the Leica Noctilux f1.0 version 4. ISO 80, SS 1/50 at F1.0. Focus is on the Steinway logo and the camera was mounted on a tripod.

I am glad to see more people share their images and experiences with Z.

I took delivery on 50S. I did some basic testing at infinity. Looks like it is another out of box work copy, no decentering stuff. It has no soft corner, with a little bit sharpening I can use it for landscape WO. To maximize the resolution cross frame on Z7, f2.8 should be enough and from f2.8 to f5.6, there is no much difference and nothing left to be desired.

The lens is very sharp at center. It might be the sharpest lens I ever have in additional to 55 OTUS. This kind of sharpness always associate with good CA correction. I know it instantly once I look at image 100%. And not surprised, it also happen to be the one have smoother bokeh than 50cron R and 50 planar ZF under all test cases I throw at it.

I have said many times 55FE is my favorite Sony lens and it is the one I miss most about Sony system. I still feel 55FE has better size and shape. However, I am 100% sure 50S surpass it in most areas, not corner sharpness WO,(about the same) but CA and center fidelity WO. 55FE has very smooth bokeh, without direct comparison, if I trust my judgement, I'd say 55FE will give a little bit advantage for background blur,(not unexpected with extra 5mm focal) but 50S will most likely give better bokeh highlight for light source due to better CA correction. 50S has one of smoothest bokeh I ever seen for a f1.8~f2 glass if we are not just talk blur quantity.

I will post a few samples I have done comparing it to 50cron R and 50 planar ZF later. If I have time, I will do more comparison with 55OTUS, 58g and 50mm Summilux ASPH. From Bokeh POV, for now, I'd rank it below the above three glass.

First case: (almost no process other than match exposure and color)

50S at f1.8

f2

50mm Summicron R f2

50mm planar ZF @f1.7

f2
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4848/44573739700_f023f2b4b7_h.jpg

In this test, if I zoom to background blur region, 50S win hands down. It also has much better in focus fidelity. However, my past experience is 50cron R usually will do poorly in test like this, however it seems always give good portrait rendering at normal shooting. It has something to do with focus transition. It is a personal feeling means hard to prove and take a grain of salts.

More to come

Edit: Keep in mind though smoother doesn't mean better. Modern glass with better correction on everything usually will give neutral and smoother look in term of background rendering. This can be traced pretty much on any good glass introduced past few years no matter is Leica (S&SL), Sony (GM) or Sigma (Art).

Curiosity by Felipe Rodriguez, on Flickr

My pussy Lamparita nosing around. Noctilux 0.95 wide open, focus was easily achieved thanks to the stellar Z7 EVF (no zooming in required). I love how Leica lenses render on B&W.

Felipe, perfect example of why we need fast glass. I like the shallow DOF used wisely.
Jim Kasson just published his comparison between Z50 and OTUS and Zony55
here

His finding match my short experience with this lens.
Here are a few set I did first day I have this lens compare to ZF.2 and Cron. The reason I did this test first is because the size of Z50, it is most likely will compete usage with these two I have. For even smaller size, I'd use M glass or even higher performance with more bokeh, I'd use OTUS or 58G.

ZF at f2

Summicron R E55 at f2

Here if I choose favorite, it might go to ZF even Z50 is still smoother I'd say.

I must confess I'm of course tempted by the new Nikkor 50, I'm pretty sure I'll end buying it (once my bank account recovers a bit). But there are so many lovely 50mm lenses! Thanks for taking the time for such comparisons. I love all those lenses, but perhaps the Z50 bokeh is a bit worse than the rest. For me it's hard to choose between the two Zeiss and of course the Cron. I've never owned one, but I do love how they render (that's also true for the Summilux-R E55).

BTW, I've got a mint Nikkor AF-S 85 1.8G at a very good price and it works like a charm with the FTZ adapter. I'll post some samples if I can (insanely busy lately).

Regards!

Been a bit busy, and the weather has only been fair. Want to go shoot the Solstice full moon at sunset today, but it's 48 hours of rain here.

Here are some from the past few weeks:

Otus 85:

(the infamous z7 banding makes an appearance, finally. easy to avoid. just shown for informational purposes.)

Finally, some very happy results with the Kipon Leica M adapter and lens cast correction tool in Phase One v12:

Elmar-M 24mm f/3.8 ASPH, f/6.3, ISO 64:

center crop 100%:

Upper right corner 100%:

New adapter focuses past infinity, seems to be square. More Leica M to follow.

I found this test to be outright mesmerizing. The 50S is an unexpected treat from Nikon, and would complicate my choice of first native lens for Z if I were in the market. I remain committed to the 24-70S—at least in my head! The rich supply of alt 50s (some of them quite characterful) means the 50mm FL is already addressed from my shelf: CZ P50/1.4 C/Y, Yashica 50/1.4 ML, 50/2 ML, Leitz Summilux M 50 v2, Elmar M 50/2.8 v1, Elmar 50/3.5 LTM RS. Of course, none of these have AF.

Thanks for continuing this excellent thread.
