Great Photos all.

I have a newbish question: Of all the newest mirrorless offerings, which system will have the smallest adapters for older SLR lenses? I was flipping through the vacation setup thread and there was a beautiful shot of the A7III + some contax lenses but I remembered how I hated the size of the FE->CY adapter. I currently shoot with an RIII+Voigtlander VME/LTM lenses because they are small but wanted to know if the new lense mount diameters will affect the adapter thickness for Nikon or Canon.

Whichever system has longest flange distance and smallest mount size will give you smallest adapter size
among Canon, Nikon, future PLS and Sony, Sony will give you smallest adapter size given it has smaller mount. However the difference will not be significant given they all share about the same flange distance range from 16mm(Nikon Z) to 20mm.(Canon R).

For WA M glass, Z might have some advantage on performance based on information received so far. I will update this later once I received my M adapter. We don't receive enough information on R yet.

one from 70-200mm f4

It won't. Adapter thickness is determined by the mount registration. The longer registration of, for example, Canon EF allows the Contax/EF adapter to be 2mm or so. Similarly, the Leica M registration allows the M/FE adapter for Sony bodies to be fairly thin. Depending on optical formulas, the advantage of thinner adapter can be diminished by the lens itself being longer. So, Leitz Elmar 90/4 plus M/FE adapter is not any shorter than CZ S85/2.8 plus CY/FE adapter. Wideness of the lens mount does not factor into these measurements.

Here is an attempt to use focus shift on the Z7, shot with the zoom at f/5.6. I ended up only using 4 of the files since I wasn't interested in getting the background in focus. No sharpening applied because to it looks like stacked photos need different sharpening than single exposures, I need to do some more testing.

Joakim, definitely a little too contrasty to my taste. I haven't used Nikon focus bracket feature at any event but play at home. I am kind of lazy and hope until one day lightroom offer bland feature to use it.

here is one of latest review of 35mm f1.8S. I'd say very impressive in term of sharpness, coma, sun star, CA etc. It might be one of best 35mm out there. However, so far, the only thing I am not convinced is its bokeh performance. Looks too neutral.

One thing interesting is there is no focus breath for all Nikon S glass. This is awesome feature for video users if anyone care.

We need more contributors here in Alt forum. Come on, guys, this is the best MILC on the market for alt forum. It works with M I hope the upcoming Z6 can bring many people here. It will be another bargain as D850.

If you select silent shutter, there is no lag or black out penalty with Z. though read out time is still only 1/15S.

one more half dome with 24-70s This was processed before Adobe update, I think I can do better job now but post it anyway for keep image thread going.

It's far from perfect but for scenes like this I would love to have an extended DoF even when using longer focal lengths than in this photo so I am going to use this functionality more and try to understand how I need to adjust my work-flow in post. The jpeg is 2-3 times larger than my single exposure files from the Z7 and I believe this is because it can't be compressed very effectively due to all the detail.

I've opted for the 50/1.8 as my first S line prime, the 35 looks really good but I want to try the 50 first and also see how my Leica M glass works on the camera before I settle on a strategy for what Nikon S (or F) glass I want. If you look at the road map there are some very interesting lenses coming already next year.

Hopefully we see more activity once people get their hands on some adapters, it my take some time before I have one. And I agree that the Z6 should help increasing the activity.

Michael amazing shots!

Joakim, very nice! The focus stacking/shift feature with the D850 is great and the Z7 has improved on this in my understanding the feature. In low light stacking images will dramatically reduce noise and improve color rendering. I use Helicon Focus software to combine the RAW images.

I have attached a brief summary from Lloyd as the preview feature for focus shift looks amazing!

Yes, I just realize this is another benefit from Z7 over competitors that I have personally ignored it. Keep in mind there is no focus breath with S glass, so this will be a very nice feature for many for studio product shots.
Also, I believe there will be no star eater as well based on my past experience with Nikon.

I’d pass 35mm zf.2 zeiss. It is no longer a good contender for high density sensor like Z7 IMO. Based on my test, sigma 35 art win on both sharpness and bokeh. For 35mm, I’d use 28E with 5X4 mode.

Both 28E and 35S will be exceptional choice. 28E will be heavier but faster with real focus ring. 35 will be lighter but FBW with added control ring feature. Like Joakim, I personally also wait for Leica M glass results such as 35 f1.7 VC and 50mm lux etc before next step. The lens I really wanted is 58Noct though.

However, one thing I like about Z7 over D850 is AF-S performance that is slightly ahead which I use most of time. I didn’t complain D850 or any Nikon SLR AF results however I don’t mind it give me optimized results every time. Especially for lens like 58G, or periphery AF point for sigma art which I no longer have. I seems always get reliable result of 28E with any NIKON DSLR though. No matter what, I just have more confidence with Z7’s AF TBH, it give me a peace of mind in field.

The Milvus 35mm is no longer up to snuff. That’s surprising - I’ve read it has some excellent micro contrast and 3D.

Probably right to keep it simple and stick with the AF lenses.

I really liked the Zeiss 35/1.4 ZE when I had it but it was huge so I am not getting the Nikon version (or the new Milvus), I rather go for the ZM version if it works fine on the Z7 or the classic C/Y version.

Milvus 1.4 too big. Was talking f2.

Sounds like 28E or 35S is the way to go.

Finally after two weeks total 15 days, I received my Shoten Leica M adapter. This is the longest time I ever need wait to receive something from Asia, maybe due to Tariff war.

The adapter has only above average build quality. The metal paint and finish quality is very good but fit on Z side and M side is only average I'd say. Nikon FTZ or native Z mount lens fit on Z7 are very nice and solid with right amount of force to put on. Shoten is kind of lose with minor rotation play but no tilt can be felt. The four notch of Nikon Z lens mount have two different sizes, two small and two larger but all four the same small with shoten. They still fit fine. I spent almost two hours to shim the adapter to finally have correct infinity focus mark on my M glasses. I consider this necessary for WA and lens with floating element design.

The big Z mount always give you some kind of secured feeling which I prefer. I love Leica S huge mount and also prefer Canon EF to Nikon F for loading the lens and that solid feel.

People complain about mount adapter price, however, there is definitely difference in term of build. Not in this case, as I want it so much to pay a premium. Can I see the image difference? I believe so. Especially for tilt adapter, a few 10s um will be enough to see with high density sensor and long exposure can reveal light leakage for poor QC. However, I agree price may not the sole indicator for quality. I will pay more to get good one without flaw mentioned. And I will buy from BH or Adorama later for easy return even I need pay more. No more oversea orders.

Bad thing first, without CPU contact on adapter, even you input lens focal length and max aperture, there is no EXIF recorded. All M glass will show 00mm/f00. This is really sucks. This means in body IS will not work with target focal length. (A feature I actually found works first time. Yes, Z7’s IBIS is really working. ) This also means one thing, I will not buy expensive NOVOFLEX adapter until someone come up with an adapter with CPU contact. I don’t expect Nikon will offer support though. I believe they may never test any aftermarket lens on Z7 anyway. ZF.2 and OTUS never have highlight spot meter function available from D850 and D810 and I see no sign of Nikon offering that after multiple firmware update.

Now good thing. Oh man, I love the M glass and Z7 combo so much. I never have the feeling with A7/R/RII with M glass even remotely close to this Z7 in term of performance and shooting. I never think of a better EVF can offer this kind of analog viewing that be able to nail focus within 5 meter every time with f1.4 glass. I even track my son and his friends during his birthday party manually at f1.4, a way I use OVF camera but only with much better results.

You might ask why and what so special about M glass since I have already test ZF and R glass on Z7. First, size and weight, it offer jewel like operating feel, 2nd, the focus barrel design, Leica M glass usually have shorter focus throw design which I prefer by a big margin than most ZF glass. R is similar in this regards but bigger, heavy that I almost want bigger grip version of Z7. Last, The M glasses I selected left with me are some of my favorite glasses in term of rendering. This is first time I can shoot them on 45M Nikon sensor.

Which M glass is a real star on Z7? Every one I have from 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH and 50mm lux ASPH, 75mmlux, 90mm summicron APO, 50cron rigid, 35mm summaron, 35mmf1.7 Utron.
I am going to test my wide glass such 21 SEM and 15VCIII soon. Based on what I have seen so far, I know I will expect something good, hopefully adapter won’t let me down

Here are a few 50lux results. Did you see funky bokeh, I don’t. I have told my friends and I am telling you, Z7 is my all-time favorite camera, the best camera I ever bought, bar none.
Long post but I feel real excited.

More tests later.

All with silent shutter, I should have used EFCS with indoor lighting. Anyway.

Excellent news Michael I suspected the Z7 1.1mm sensor cover glass would play a lot better. There does not appear to have the corner smearing with the 50 Lux and 35 Lux Pre as with the A7r without the Kolari mod.

No doubt better adapters will come on line after the initial test results start to flow through. I remember the initial hype with the A7r with the M mount lenses only to be disappointed.

I never had a problem with the Mandler 35 'lux smearing on a stock sensor, Charles. The angle of incidence is very low. The resolution of the long edges drops off steeply at long distances and wide apertures, but close focused like this, the results would be similar. I've got a comparison posted between a stock 7rII and UT-modded rII here... https://flic.kr/s/aHskTvGBnQ

A tougher test of compatibility would be the Summicron 35 ASPH. That struggles on modded cameras.

I really meant the Z7 EVF viewing experience and no lag shooting with either silent or not with almost perfect holding ergonomics with M glasss on Z7 improve upon A7/7R/7RII. This plus all the benefits I mentioned earlier in this thread make Z7 totally home run for me. I like D850 very much but not this much.

Previous Alph body didn’t work for me with M glasses in the end. 50lux ASPH is funky with stock Sony: center has extra SA, corner had funky bokeh. It is not 50lux should be and with Z7, it perform as good as M.

I will drop the bomb later with testing result of 15VCIII, 21SEM and VC35f1.7.

Charles, the take away is never sell your M glass I am sure you will love the experience and results.
