Douglas, incredible set and the best air show pics I've ever seen! Just wonderful imagery.
Thank you Robert! I must say I have taken better airshow pictures with my Nikon gears (more interesting aircrafts, more dramatic light, longer focal length at 600mm). I can’t wait for the Sony 200-600!

Amazing lens. But haven't seen a single person used this with the a7iii in this thread?
Approximately half of the images I posted in the first two pages were taken with the A7r III or ILCE-7RM3 in the EXIF. Actually, quite a few of Douglas’ images were also were, too but the EXIF data is not readily visible.

The last months I was trying a few different options for the tele range. The FE 70-200 F4, adapted Canons (70-200 F4, F4 IS & F4 IS II) and Sigma (100-400). After seeing a lot of great images from the 100-400 GM here I also wanted to try that one, but it was too expensive compared to the rest of my options.
Because of a Sony demo day in a local store I was able to buy a 100-400 GM with a great discount.
I've never owned such a long lens. I have to learn how to use it for landscapes, because even at F11 DOF is very narrow beyond 200mm. I really underestimated how thin the DOF actual is.
I think I'll have to focus stack oftenly just to have enough of the scene in sharp focus.
It seems to be a nice lens. It's sharp and has the GM color rendering. Bokeh can be a bit rough, but you can't have it all in a lens like this.

I'm not sure I understand your comment re. DOF being thin ?
DOF isn't lens specific it's science. At 400mm and at infinity focus DOF is infinity, which is in fact the same at any FL and aperture. Even just before infinity it's 493m x 192m at 400mm. I confirmed the last figure using a DOF calculator. Maybe I have misunderstood and you mean for example let's say a portrait at 20m ? You would still get 0.41m after and 0.39m in front of the subject at f5.6 and 400mm.
It's not easy to find an infinity shot at 400mm but here's one (cropped). f5.6

Maybe I wasn't clear. I didn't mean that it's lens specific, I know the science you also mentioned. DOF for each lens is the same if the subject size remains the same.
At 300mm/F11 with the focus/subject at 50m you still get "only" around 19m of DOF.
The longest lens I normally use is 85mm. When shooting that same subject from the exact same spot (so very different framing) at F11 you get DOF to infinity.
So the only thing I meant to say is that in practice it's challenging to get a lot in focus in a "deep" landscape where not everything is at infinity.

i see what you were alluding to now Jochen .. though I have to say I don't shoot many landscapes at 50m so that's never been an issue for me

Yes, keep them coming! I've been checking all the shots shared here, thank you!
I'm trying to decide if I get this lens now in September for a trip to NZ or wait for a potential sale on Black Friday.

Thank you, K-H! To keep this thread alive...Hope the OP has bought his 100-400 and will post some shots soon!
I total agree that the 100-400 GM is more than a lens for birds.

Thanks for the photos!
Haven't got mine yet but tried a demo in store two days ago.
Trying to get a price match but is turning out hard.
Is it easy to use a CPL on this lens?
