Disappointingly poor 700mm performance from the 500PF
Chris
Just to be clear, I was teasing a bit, because of the somewhat over the top criticism towards the 500PF. I am more than impressed with 700mm shots like the ones posted by medicineman404!
Lens finally came in and today was the 1st day I was able to get out with it. This Eagle completely surprised me, I was at the Rivers edge looking for them and all of a sudden 50 Gulls started flying overhead. I looked up in the sky and I heard a "splash", looked down and this Eagle was just pulling out of the water. Quick as I could I fired off a bunch of shots (the 1st three are in sequence), not perfectly sharp but considering the light quality and ISO it wasn't as bad as I thought they were going to be.
Unfortunately these shots were about 5 minutes after sun set behind the trees, the difference between perfect light and kind of crappy light.
Here is another series I took today of a Hawk. All but one with the 1.4x III. Other then the one where I couldn't get the entire bird in the frame these are all 50% or more crops.
I met a new 500PF owner who was out with his maiden run of D850/500PF after being a long time Canon user. He was impressed right off the bat with how well it would track the N. Harriers we were shooting...he mentioned selling off a lot of Canon gear in the near future
Some "busy" bokeh for the bokeh gurus to analyze...
finally the kingfisher came in front of my hideout !
(sat there for the 6th time with the 500PF)
shot with the D500 and 500PF, this was the first light of the day and it was so 'warm' that it looked like a carrot,
that is how orange it was XP.
have a feeling I could have bin sharper if I used a higher SS but wanted to keep ISO as low as possible.
ISO320
500mm
F5.6
1/125sec
EV -0.33
shot from a Sirui T-1204X carbon with K10X head and VR ON

Since last night I looked at the entire 300 PF thread and this 500 PF thread.
Both are great lenses.
I'm leaning towards the 300mm because:
- lower cost ... Used 300 PF + 1.7x = around $1780 vs the 500 PF $3600 (new)
- Less size / weight
I know some of you have used both the 300 PF and 500 PF with TC's.
How much of a difference in AF accuracy and detail is there between:
300 PF + 1.7x vs 500 PF?
And if you don't mind, the 300 PF + 1.4x vs 300 PF + 1.7x?
