I am also and that means I'm planning $6K CDN all in which may actually stop me from buying it. I might take that $6K and put it towards the Sony 400/2.8 instead....who knows...depends on what Sony and Nikon bring to the mirrorless market in September also.

I'm thinking 2x the price of the 300mm f/4 PF (about $4000 +/-). This would be in line with the pricing of the faster glass, as the 500mm f/4E is about twice the price of the 300mm f/2.8G vII

Anyone know the predicted release date?... 2018?...

I think it will be in 2018. I think sometime during the Photokina madness Nikon will release full specs, price and release date. I'd give a totally speculative guess of getting it in one's hands late October or November.

I'd be interested in a 500/5.6, have to see what it costs, though. And I'm currently shooting a different system, as well. So I'll just have to see. Looks interesting though.

I'd prefer a 400/5.6 or a 500/4, but I'll take a 500/5.6 as long as it's optically stellar wide open as f/5.6 at 500mm is getting a bit slow . . .

I believe it will show September to October 2018.

Made a mistake with my math in my thread on price and weight. This upcoming 500 will be 166% longer than the 300 PF. I simply will multiply the 300 PF's price of $2000 by 166% and come up with roughly $3300.

I will *guess* the new Nikon 500 5.6 PF will not be more than $3500 USD.

"Optically stellar wide open" is a good characterization. And add one more quality....fast AF.

If it has these two, this lens is going to be very exciting. We already know it will be short and light.

I'm always reach starved so my thoughts are already going to how well this may or may not work with the 1.4 and 1.7 TCs (no hope for the 2xTC)....700/8, 850/9.5....hmmmmm.....I think I better wait for the 600PF

The admin at NR said he has a single source telling him release (or maybe full announcement) in September (likely Photokina) but with only one source he can't be very certain. Not sure how many sources he has saying it is $4300 USD

Just curious... why is a 400mm f/5.6 considered fast enough for you, but a 500mm f/5.6 is too slow? At 500mm, the increased magnification will provide better isolation and the relatively slow aperture should, in theory, have a more pleasing bokeh than a 400mm f/5.6 lens.

The current 500mm f/4 FLE is too expensive for most, even serious, photographers. Forced to settle for last years models because of financial constraints, this lens might be just affordable enough for those willing to spend $4000 or so on a top performing optic... that, of course, presumes that the lens does not underperform.

cheers,
bruce

The 4/500 is too much of a burden for many, both in price and maybe even more so in weight/size. The loss of one stop can be easily forgiven for many subjects, as long as the lens has excellent AF and is sharp wide open. It's high on my list together with the 300PF, just waiting to see if one of the new mirrorless FF bodies is a better platform for me than a DSLR like D500.

I am not sure that you read my response to jhinkey, as what you wrote pretty much restates the point that I was making. I shoot a 200-400mm f/4 regularly... this lens is big and poorly balanced. It can be shot hand-held for a short periods of time, but is not practical for long-term hand held use... especially on unstable platforms like kayaks, canoes, zodiacs, etc... Like you, I would pair a 500mm f/5.6 w/ a 300mm PF or a 70-200FLE w/ 1.4x... this smaller kit can be carried long distances and should allow for more photographic opportunities whenever tripod use is not practical.

cheers,
bruce

I would hope that it would be lighter and smaller than the existing 500 f6.7 PF combo that is about 35.5 ounces and 7 inches long.

It would also have to have better AF and IQ to justify a much greater price.

DOF @ f/5.6 on a 500 f/4 is still small at normal distances. @ f/4 at say 20m DoF is 0.24m and at f/5.6 0.34m. You can still get amazing background blur because at such FL's the lens defocuses very fast. If the background is very close to the subject then you will a busier result. I'm not worried at all about a little more DoF for a lens that is going to be less than half the weight, and looks to be around 130mm or so shorter.

But still insist the 600 PF should have been the first priority seeing they have a 200-500 f/5.6 already.

I use that combo a fair amount also and get excellent IQ out of it. I would guess the 500PF would have better IQ but probably wouldn't really result in much meaningful differences. But it doesn't appear that it will be as light or as small as the 300/1.7.

For my shooting the big benefit of the 500PF would be Auto-AF mode still active and better support for the outer points, some AF improvements (I do notice AF slowdown with the 1.7TC as the light drops). I also would have a 700 f/8 combo out of it using only a 1.4TC versus having to use a 2.0TC on the 300PF and "only" getting 600 f/8. And maybe be able to stretch it to 850 f/9.5?

Still, if the NR price of $4300USD is correct then that will be a very hard sell for me and I'd likely just stick with the 300PF and all three TCs as needed.

I would have liked to see the 600PF first also but I know that one will be close to 400DOII price and that is a good chunk of change....would have to sell my 400DOII to buy that potential lens.

Didn't you sell your 1DXII? Do you still have a 5D4, if so surely the 400 DO II AF's a lot better on it than on the A9.

I think a 500mm being about double the price of a 300mm is about right and I wouldn't be surprised to see the price a little below $4K. Canon and Nikon 500 f/4 are less than double the 300 f/2.8 price if that means anything, so maybe the $4300 price came from a currency conversion of some European country. Canon 70-200 f/2.8L III was said to be $2900 but that was based on a direct conversion from the rip-off Swedish price, true price is $2100

I don't have any Canon bodies (except my very first Rebel just for nostalgia) so I'm just holding onto glass for now to see what shakes out but soon GAS will hit for Sony 400GM or this 500PF or something and I will be forced to sell some of that Canon glass....we shall see.

I surely hope it was a currency conversion (which always come out way high into USD) as you say.

Got that right. I've seen it once shooting with the 300 PF (which I've put thousands of photos through since receiving my pre-order). I had to stack images with the sun in the frame to see it.
