Chris do you mean a match for the D500? In my view D500 is not anywhere near the a9 and I think the mini a9 will trounce it.
My future hope is mini a9 plus Commlite plus 500PF.

I have been on the fence for a new wildlife birding system for 6 months now, waiting because I did not see what I wanted. I liked the Sigma 500/4, but really wanted something lighter, being weary after lugging a 3100 grams lens along for years . I saw the Nikon D500, but really wanted a A9 type of camera, being weary about mirror slap, shutter shock, AF calibration etc.
Then Nikon puts out the 500PF, initial reports are very favorable. This lens + the 1.4TC is basically ideal. But what body? Then Sony is rumored to bring out a mini A9 soon.
If this turns out true, it will be my dream birding set-up.
You guys pioneer with the adapters, which is great and I follow these threads.
If the Commlite works out on the mini A9, it is almost to good to be true. Otherwise the MC-11 with the Canon 400DOII + converters is still a second plan.

I just got the Commlite today to test on the A9...all I can say is don't make any plans to be using that on future Sony bodies. The 300PF and 300PF/1.4TC is half decent....the 500E is a mess at best....200-500 is not bad...simllar to the 300PF.
The Canon MC-11 is a ways ahead of this Commlite thing....400DOII (even with 1.4 and 2.0TCs) on MC-11 on A9 is my go to combo these days until I get a native long Sony lens.
Right now I'm deciding between keeping my 500PF preorder or swapping it for Sony 400GM preorder.....waiting to see what Sony actually announces in October.....but I have no hope and have now totally blocked it out of my mind that I will ever be shooting 500PF on a Sony body....unless Commlite comes out with some magic FW....it won't be a consideration in my plans either way.

500PF is best shot on D500, D850 or D5 depending on ones' needs for reach (D500/850 over D5), high-ISO (D5), and if you can make use of FX or just DX (D850 vs D500) and of course cost (D500 surely the best value). Again, I really wouldn't be banking on adapting Nikon to Sony....but Sony may be announcing some lenses along with this APS-C camera and the 200-600 has been rumoured for awhile....we should know soon...

Thanks for that, and disappointing to hear that Nikon glass on a Sony body is probably not an option. I could wait for a Nikon high end APSC camera, but that will take too long, unless Nikon has a mirrorless D500 successor in the works..
So then it will be a choice of getting the SLR D500, which I see as second choice to a Sony mini A9, or face the dilemma between a zoom Sony 200-600, which surely will be announced soon, and the expensive Canon 400DOII with two converters.

At least the options are there for a portable yet high end birding combo.

I'm in a similar situation, but my subject is mainly flying dragonflies and not birds (smaller focus distance, even more difficult for AF, low weight even more important etc.).

I'm now using Canon DSLR and planning to use primarily Nikon 300PF/500PF in a future setup, with body to be decided. The mini-A9 sounds very promising but like the post from arbitrage shows having to use mount adapters is a (potential) headache. D500 seems like the safest bet, but of course in some ways (e.g. the Liveview focus) it feels outdated now; a rumored D500s might change that. A (mini-)A9 would be great if you know the combo is going to work reliably with the lenses you are going to use (in my case just a few, have to add a 100-150 macro and maybe a WA prime).

Fortunately I still have half a year to decide about upgrading, but even then it's a tough decision. Sony has more lenses coming but we don't know which ones (native lenses always better, I would love if they make a sharp, very light/compact 4/300mm with fast AF but I'm not holding my breath...). In a few months a lot can happen with mount adapters, so they work more reliably on certain lenses. And even Canon could wake up from a long sleep and produce something competitive, although that looks extremely unlikely

Just few samples. No keepers yet, just trying to find out what can I get in real world. Effective FL means what's the final focal length after the 1.5X crop of D500 and crop in the image itself.

Unlike some users reported I'm not going to to restrict any SS with this lens. I can get sharp images at 1/100 and 1/80 seconds. But the issue reported might be true (cannot shoot in continuous mode). I usually shoot 1 shot at a time such slow speeds as the wildlife usually move a lot.

First day out with the Nikon 500mm PF.
Focus not as quick as I hoped for.
More misses than I expected.
Need to look a little deeper into the menu for proper autofocus settings.
Incredibly light and easy to handle.
Plenty sharp.
Look forward to big surf just around the corner.
Aloha all.

Joe the Heron's eye again confirms this lens does not lack for sharpness.

Joe what body with the 500PF for slow AF?
I shot with D500+500PF last 4 days and thought opposite, with me
being pleasantly happy with AF/AF-C tracking but then again I'm coming
into D500 use alonside a9 use and have to temper my feelings about the DSLR, but
actually the D500 pleases me and I thought not before actually using it.

I know the pros here probably won't be satisfied with this image's quality point
but for me the snapshooter I was very pleased....handheld effective 1050mm I think
my copy plays well with the 1.4TCiii.
I found shooting Savannah NWR and Harris Neck NWR that 500mm on the crop body is
most often plenty, which is to say I used the 1.4TCiii just to see how it would mesh.

500PF in campaigne dress.
And noting the 500PF reminds me of the Blunderbuss.
Thus my nickname for this lens.

Yes, looks promising; looking forward to some full size closeup images (or 100% crops of image near MFD) to see how the detail holds up.

That’s funny. I thought everything looked horrible. But then again not sure what you could expect from distant poorly lit subjects. Honestly don’t see the point of those pics. They don’t prove anything except that distant and poorly lit subjects look terrible when zoomed in on.

It will be first year in quite a while no Conowingo for me. The better-half has chosen Bosque del Apache. I don't think the F5.6 will work for the early morning blast off there

@MedicineMan404 , sorry to hear that you would not able to visit Conowingo this year, I live couple of hours away from there so normally visit twice a week from mid November to mid February. You are right about the early morning shoot, that is why I purchased the 400MM GM, will see how that goes this year. Hope to see you in person some day at Conowingo.
