'It is also worth noticing that all sample photos are taken with the noise reduction switched off and sharpening set on minimum or low, depending on a given camera, in order to make the comparison between them easier. As most of users don’t set the sharpening so low in their cameras our sample shots might seem weak to them.'
Admittedly, I don't know from JPEGs or in-camera settings, but why would these destroy one's ability to take an image with the subject in focus? If an f/5.6 (!) lens can't do that it's useless.
The shame is mine will only be used on little song birds until November's BIF outing. That's OK,more time to figure the D500.
The D500 is growing on me and I hope it will match with this new 500. AvianScott wrote:
There are those of us who pre-ordered late and would gladly take a lightly used copy off your hands
We're currently running from Florence too.Heading west 7 hours for 5 days of sunshine. Here in the mountains we get enough rain and the thought of 6-7 more days of rain forced us to load the campervan.....head west young man

Nikon should have realized that Flo was coming and delay all the orders on the east coast to the gulf coast....

Safe travels! Dealt with Harvey last year and being in it and losing everything is no joy.
Everyone in the path, stay safe...I heard it's a good time to go to Alaska or Colorado
2 weeks of standing "water" downstream of 2 treatment plants

FYI, shipments are on time and well for me, mine is awaiting pick up at my local shop
Additional info: I made the preorder the day after the announcement, basically when preorders were being accepted
Ah, the legendary "local shop." Wish we had those around here. There is only Dodd Camera, and that's about it. Just called them and they said they'll get some, but don't know when. I placed several pre-orders online, so I guess I just sit back and wait. It's just a little annoying that they announce a release date, when in reality very few people get them on that date, but of course that's nothing new.
Lenstip use in-camera JPEGs with 0 sharpness, it's probably softest output you can get.
I was still able to extract details by applying my normal sharpening to these JPEGs, and I noticed that many of the low shutter speed bird pictures (especially from d500) have either small amount of camera shake or motion blur or both. It's not that obvious from unsharpened pictures since blur masks it.
I'm still not sure why aren't they providing RAWs? Although with that lack of basic telephoto technique it doesn't really matter. At least their MTF tests are good for comparison.
500 PF seems to be on par (a bit worse in the center, same in corners) with 180-400@400/4
and almost the same as 300 PF @ 5.6 in the center and slightly better in corners. Of course the results are only valid for close focusing distance and lenses might behave much differently at medium, long distance and infinity.
Called B&H on my pre-order. They said that their shipment arrives on 9/20 and will ship out on 9/21. So much for going to the "big guys" for getting it early.
As for the lenstip review... well I'm not going to be an apologist or look for the cause... reality,... those pictures suck!
A reviewer should go out and use the lens in real shooting conditions or not do the review at all. Shite like that just serves the reviewer and not those actually considering the purchase of a lens.
I hope the lens performs better than what they displayed, otherwise I'll be returning mine and put the money towards a D850.

Anything y’all like to see tested? Bodies I have access to D850 and D5. I wont be able to get around to it till Sunday
Another ambassador video
D850 please If you could take some shots with VR on around 1/80 - 1/200 that would be awesome. My 300PF had problems with my D7200 at those ranges, but the D850 seem reasonable.
