This fox walked right up to me by Bear Swamp Pool at Bombay Hook this past Sunday. Just curious and wasn't afraid of me. So I got in my car and he proceeded to put his paws on my car door and just looked at me for about 15 seconds and went on his way. He had to be about 1.5 feet from my face. Just surreal. Then he made his way down to Bear Swamp and found a place to take a nap.
Tried out the 500pf with the TC-17II Dec last year...found the focus a bit faster with the focus limiter on... f/9.5, 850mm, D850.... obviously not the best quality but was fun..

I've been going back and forth on getting a 1.4E III TC for my 500 PF and I keep reading for any action or fast motion, it's probably better to just crop than to lose AF performance, IQ and stop if light. So I've been holding off in it. What's your finding with cropping it using the TC?

my last post was with the TC-17II. With the TC 1.4E III my limited experience tells me that you are probably better off to just crop rather than use the TC especially if you are using a high MP body and distance to subject is reasonable.... With the TC 1.4 if movement is more predicable , results could be acceptable. Below is with the TC1.4II + close to a 100% crop

I like ! A question I have is , what kind of jacket is the retriever wearing ? I have seen many wearing neoprene jackets . This looks like nothing I have ever seen .
Thanks!!!! She actually isn't wearing a vest. She doesnt have anything on. I have thousands of photos of my dogs retrieving ducks. This was just the first with the 500pf

I read about D780 and it makes lot of sense to me. Talking about edge of water shots, the live view shooting works exactly like mirrorless with phase detect and high frame rates, apart from the OVF and DSLR experience. Since you don’t use an EVF for those shots, and in general for landscapes...this kind of camera should be very good... 500 will be very happy on it i think...of course I haven’t used the camera...
I think they should have brought mirrorless level functionality in a DSLR long ago...most landscape shooters use monitor and that was crippled in all DSLRs always...It does make sense to have an optical finder as well as fast monitor shooting...
If they refresh bodies like D850 and D500 in line with D780...there will not be a need for mirrorless for wildlife and landscape photography...especially a body like D850 which is suitable for landscapes will benefit a lot from a fully functioning live view shooting. It will be like a Z camera without EVF.
Also many of us are very comfortable not putting my camera to eye...
Yes if you are okay only using a rear-LCD then a DSLR with excellent full sensor coverage AF via LV can be a powerful option.
But I do rely on the OVF/EVF for over 50% of my shooting. The DSLR OVF will always have the limited AF spread. Therefore I prefer the MILCs now.
The Canon 1DXIII basically made an R5 via LV and a 1DX via OVF. But without a flip or tilt screen it was dead in the water to me. Great LV needs a tilt or flip screen (preferably tilt for my use).
Well... I just placed the order...fingers crossed I enjoy the lens I have the 300PF and it's been a blast to shoot...even with a 1.7xTC the results have been great.
500PF owners...if you've owned the 300PF, did you sell it as you thought the 500PF was better all around?
Anyone using the 1.7x with the 500 or is the newer 1.4x a better combo?

You're going to absolutely LOVE the 500 PF. I have not owned a 300PF (too pricey for a short Prime lens for what I photo). I would say you will know if you will sell that 300 PF if after a few months you find you dont pull it out anymore.
I still have my 200-500 after buying my 500 PF from about 2 months ago. I haven't used it once since. Though it is an EXCEPTIONALLY sharp copy of the 200-500 I feel I should keep it as a backup to the 500 PF so I haven't sold it yet.
I also don't use a TC. I rather crop then lose a full stop of light (normally like to shoot wide open) plus less loss of IQ cropping than using a TC.
