Thanks for checking. I am sure one can simply change the foot if wanted. If I do get this lens, I know I will buy a Kirk or RRS foot.
Hope this link has not been posted yet. If so, sorry. He says this is one sharp lens! Oops, just went back and I see that AvianScott already posted charts.
Already ordered the Kirk 70-200/2.8 replacement foot for the 500PF.
Just might work.
Did the same for the FE100-400GM long before it arrived. Got lucky.
Might again.

Haha I don't even know when the 500PF is supposed to ship.
My D500 already has....and so has the foot.
Will be funny hearing a mirror clickity clik again
How well does the D500 Af with f/8 combos? The MTF's of the 500 PF mean it should handle the 1.4x TC with ease IQ wise, but will this combo struggle for BIF? Really spoilt by the AF ability of the A9 with f/8 combo.

No clue, and like you having an a9 I might be spoiled considering the a9 seems to have no bounds.
With my 7Dii history I'd bet once a 1.4TC is placed on a slow lens like the 500PF and the D500 we'll be down to a center
spot, maybe center with the 4 little surrounding ones.....just a guess, this is my first Nikon lens and camera since 1975.
Do not know if this link has been posted. Late information/images on new 500 5.6 PF
NR Admin quotes:
> "Optical performance that is not compromised with the use of the TC-14E III AF-S teleconverter.”
In the last sentence, what is NR referring to? On what does NR base this claim?
>. "AF speed increased by making lens elements in the focusing group lighter."
There are sample images of wildlife, but I cannot determine sharpness with such small images. With any new product, it is always the same hype in the beginning.

It does fairly well but my two combos are 500E/2x and 300PF/2x....I usually use that sort of reach for perched birds and not flight...I really haven't shot action with either of those f/8 combos. I've had no issue focusing on perched birds including hovering hummers and birds moving about on the branch or having to quickly refocus on the bird on another branch or right after it lands. I've also seen no difference between D500 or D850 for this work.
Now the fact that I was using 2xTC to get to f/8 and with the 500PF you will only need a 1.4TC, I have a feeling things should be even better.
I really, really, really would love to try out a D5 as I think it might do the job even better but I just can't bring myself to spend over $6000 CDN for a used one at this point in time when the market is moving fast right now.....I really hope the used market will bring the price point down a ways more soon and then maybe I will get one.
This lens is on my radar. On the process of selling some things to pick up a D500 and then I'll get a 200-500 to use. It will probably be a long time until I can actually pick one of these guys up, but I have a good feeling about it in the long run. This is basically the lens I've always hoped for.
I would think Steve Perry will be doing hands on with the 500PF in Costa Rica soon, maybe now as I'm typing? Or he should be--best Nikon reviews/lessons out there.
But I didn't see a good quick answer on whether the 500PF will AF/AF-c with the 1.4TCiii.
I don't know if it would matter for me and BIF, I don't know that I could track a bierd at over 1000mm effective even if the camera can.
Yes, it will autofocus, although not with all the focus points. For the D5, D850, and D500 the active points will look like this.
The explanation is on this page: https://nps.nikonimaging.com/technical_solutions/d500_tips/af/focus_points/
The key part is one of the notes that says: “With support for a combined aperture of f/8.”
Elinder thanks.
Now I don't have a Nikon (shipped), so green square is a go plus the little dinky black points
around it AND the other black squares that are not grey?
That would be plenty IF one is to add the TC.
I'll rent a TC from Roger first. Perched bierds for sure.

95mm B+W Uv en route.
With the Nikon cameras like D5/D500/D850 it will AF and even though Nikon claims it only supports the points seen in the diagram a few posts up it actually allows you to try with all the points and IME with other f/8 combos it works fine on the outer points if light is good.
The only thing you do lose is the option to select 3D and Auto AF modes. I wish Nikon would allow me to try with Auto AF as I use that mode a lot for fast BIF and I know the camera could handle it in good light just based on how well it can AF with the unsupported points anyways.

Nikon has "153 points" but all the small dot ones aren't user selectable (which is a good thing as that would take too long to move the points around). They do function. You can select the large box ones and in the actual VF you don't see the small dots...in fact you don't see the main points either (which is sort of annoying).
When you get the camera let me know and I'll send you my setup to get you started.
I'm getting antsy to start an Official Nikon 500PF Discussion and Image thread....I may do it now with the Nikon samples and go from there....any objections??

I could also rename this thread as it is mine
Let's hope it does not have an 11-minute "review" of the specs., but how it actually works in the real world, along with actual images of the results.
