I am currently in a Sony/Canon split system moving towards Sony. Today I still have a Canon 500mm IS II that I use on a 5D IV or adapt to Sony.
It looks like many on this thread have tried the 500mm PF on Sony using Commlite adapter. How well does it work on A7R III? How does it compare to Sony 100-400mm with 1.4X?
Alternative it to sell rest of Canon stuff and buy D850 and lens, but hate to swap systems for the fifth time.

Thoughts from those with first hand experience?
I can't offer anything in regards to Sony as I've never used one, but I too had the Canon 500 f/4 II and 5DIV (+ other lenses) and sold it all for the D850 and Nikon 500 f/4 E. It was mainly the AF performance for birds - especially BIF - which pulled me over.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the input. I am confident that the D850 is better than the 5D IV, but I have literally been back and forth between Nikon (D1H, D1x, D2H, D2X, to Canon 20D through 40D back to Nikon D800E and D4 back to Canon 1DX , 1Dx II 5D SR and 5D IV, I am not sure I have the heart (and Money) to jump back to Nikon again. If it weren't for the 500mm PF, I wouldn't even consider it.
So for me it's one of four options: 1) Buy Sony 600mm 2) Buy Nikon 500mm PF and use on Sony, or 3) Buy D850 and PF 500mm 4) Buy nothing and stick with Sony 100-400 with Canon 500mm as BIF lens with Canon body.

I guess it depends on how much you shoot BIF or other AF difficult subjects. For stills, the 5DIV is a good camera, don't get me wrong, and the 500 f/4 II is a stellar lens, but the AF of the 5DIV just wasn't up to the task. Do you still have the 1DXII?
*I've asked my friend Geoff to chime in here as he has a better insight than I.

A 3.2 Lb 500mm is my only real driver.
The latest I've heard is that the 500 PF performs poorly on the Sony bodies with the commlite, even the a9. I would personally avoid option 2 because of this. If it was me, I'd probably choose option 1 or 3 depending on budget. You could also maybe go with a D500 to save costs and ease your transition from Canon to Nikon for wildlife.
