Hey, noob question!
Does the macro lens ALWAYS extend? If I were to only use it for portraits, would I have the lens almost fully extended at all times? Or does it only apply when working at macro distances?

Anyone noticed how similar the 110 is to the old 125? The shape of the barrel, the placement of the aperture ring, the "double" extension helicoid. The entrance pupil is the same size, so maybe they reused some older parts and based the optics on the same design with some tweaking.
Also, the Makro-Planar 100/2 seems to share the outer barrel with the CV 125.

I've never used an extending Macro before.
It extends more the closer you focus. For "normal" use, it won't be much at all.

At one point, wasn't Cosina producing both 100mm Makro-Planar and CV 125 Macro-Lanthar?

Yes, they did. Don't they still produce all of the manual focus Zeiss lenses?
I was looking for an article I read years ago where the author mentioned some tension between Cosina and Zeiss because the CV 125 was better corrected and 1:1 while the Zeiss Makro, although high resolution and contrast, wasn't well corrected and its macro abilities not as useful.

Let's think about the advantages/disadvantages of the CV 110 macro over the Sony 90 macro
Pros:
More working distance
More blur potential
Slightly more max light transmission
More APO correction?
Cons:
Longer when extended towards 1:1
No Optical Stabilizer
No AF (subjective, of course)
Also, not sure which has better weather sealing, at this point
Much of this isn't know yet:
The CV 110/2.5 extends when focusing, while the Sony 90/2.8 doesn't, so a field comparison of actual lenses is needed to tell which will have the best working distance. We need actual lenses to compare light transmission, which can vary by glass type. The Sony 90/2.8 drops to approx 70mm at 1:1, so the CV 110/2.5 might have a greater blur potential. I think it's likely better APO corrected than the Sony, though the Sony 90/2.8, while not perfect, is well corrected.
The CV 110/2.5 will have electrical contacts, so it will have the benefit of IBIS.

I want the 110 for some scientific work. The 65 is great and excellent for some documentation and with the addition of the 110 and a little more working space and its most likely excellent IQ, with some tubes, it should be very nice.

The 65/2 (which I own) and 110/2.5 would be a great pair, though I like to have ~2x FL factors between my adjacent primes, so a 125 or 135 would be better for me.
When the 125/2.5 prices come down I may just grab one of those and live with the adaptation/non-CPU like I do now with my 85ZM and 180/4 APO CV.

I was quite interested in the 110 until I saw the photos of it fully extended. Now not as much. Still curious to see how it will perform and what pricing will be.
Great to have options though and a longish native macro 1:1 was definitely missing. The 90G is a great lens, quite small for a 1:1 and takes beautiful portraits at f2.8.

Since you are looking at it fully extended, to get to 1:1, how is that off putting? It isn't like you would normally be hand holding it and if tubes are used on other lenses to get close, there you go with length. I am not sure of the correlation with using it for close-up and the problem with the extension, which is pretty much normal for macro work. Throw in some bellows and you have real extension. :^)

Have you ever used an extending macro?
The extension only happens when you shoot very close subjects, otherwise from 1m to infinity, it's practically retracted. I like that better than always extended (typical macro style).
