135mm f3.5 Carl Zeiss Planar T* (565g, 67mm, 180mm).

This is an extremely rare lens, and is already highly sought after as a collectable (just check the prices sometime, if you can find one). I'm not sure of the total number of these produced, but I'm pretty sure it's less than 1000 total units (I've heard anywhere from 150 - 850).

That should make it more rare than the Voigtlander APO Lanthars of the 1950s and 1960s, and look what they go for these days. If anything, the 135mm Planar T* is destined to be even more valuable and sought after. It is the only general purpose large format taking lens Zeiss ever made featuring their T* multicoating process.

I had the one before the reissue (only coating and filter thread difference) and it was phenomenal as a wide portraiture lens. However, stopped down the traditional planar design could not compete with the state of the art 110.

We are dangerously off topic now.

I'll probably invest in the 110 APO, have the 21 Loxia and doubt the skopar will surpass it.

Anyone here who has compared the 125 to the Zeiss 100 MP? I've heard that, even ignoring the latter's purple fringing, the 125 was the superior of the two.

Only direct comp. I have seen, but not too exhaustive.

Sorry for my ignorance. Can anyone explain the significance of these terms, Nokton, Ultron, Lanthar and Skopar? Thanks!

I did some research and found this within the rangefinder forum. My original assumption was that this would be like leica, but it's not....

"Skopars are the smallest and slowest of a series. They are small enough to stick in a pant pocket. They are also typically a little "harsh" (contrasty) when rendering images.

Ultrons are larger then Skopars but are faster and render tones more smoothly, too. They are also priced higher.

Noktons are the fastest and most expensive of a series. A good example is the 35 Skopar, 35 Ultron, and 35 Nokton.

Heliar and Lanthar lenses are (I believe) named soley by design and not price point as they are not part of a series."

Does anyone know any better?

Nice little review, thanks - I hadn't seen it before. They look quite similar in bokeh, etc judging from the one identical composition.

I like the front aperture rings too, but unfortunately the new 110 has a rear aperture ring. It looks a lot easier to find than the Loxia ones, however.

I like the forward aperture ring, too. So far as I know, all the other current Voigtlanders have a forward ring, except for all the Nikon mount lenses, curiously. I suspect there's something about F mount that encourages Voigtlander to move the aperture ring aft. (Or, maybe that's just how Nikon shooters roll.) I'll speculate that Voigtlander chose to move the aperture ring back with this new 110mm because it's a macro. Maybe there was (also) an optical reason, but more evidently avoiding the front of the lens leaves room for a ring light and helps hands not spook little critters.

I wonder if the new 110 with outperform the CV125/2.5? I have the 125 in OM mount. I was curious as to the design as both have 58mm filter size. A little digging revealed CV 125 has 11 lenses in 9 groups and the 110mm 14 lenses in 12 groups. There is clearly a large amount of FL shortening to achieve 1:1 mag in the CV 125 as it loses much less light than my bellows lens of almost same focal length. This is also revealed by the working distance. Using thin lens approximation to obtain an idea of "effective focal length " at 1:1 ("EFL"=2+m+1/m)
this is 95mm for the CV125 and 87.5 for the new 110. (MFD listed as 380mm for CV125mm and 350mm for the 110)

Oh, another perhaps major difference for hand held shots is the new 100 will almost undoubtedly have a "focus distance encoder" like the 65 despite being MF--this should enable 5 axis image stabilization unlike any situation with the 125 (except tripod of course). I wish there were a way to manually enter the focusing distance--Techart had emailed they thought about trying to enable that capability but surrendered.

From the specs, the new 110/2.5 is about 1/2" longer in order to accommodate the extra elements. If it performs like the 65/2, it will be one of the best in its class.

The VC dealer mentioned 21mm and 125mm when I brought the 65/2 and 40/1.2 (around Oct), he wasn't just BSing! But then I must resist visiting his shop anytime soon, his shop has nothing really interesting except VC.

125mm is a bit tempting, longing to see how it compares to Zeiss 135/2 and Sigma 135/1.8 for non-macro performance.

A bit wonder why 65 and 110 are available in E mount only, I have an impression that longer lens don't benefit from shorter flange distance but seems that's not true

I will most likely get the 21mm. All of the UWA options currently available are a bit hard to justify on a graduate student's budget, and I don't like the larger SLR options. This seems like the sweet spot if it stays around $500. Weather sealing would be nice, but I can't get it all. Also heavily considering the Tamron 28-75mm depending on price, that will pretty much round out what I need from a kit.

Love the 21/2.8 Lox, but something a bit slower and less weight/bulk and as good pointed into the sun and sharp across the frame would certainly be purchased.

I really only use a 21mm when hiking/backpacking, so smaller/lighter and very good performance is pretty attractive. We'll see if this lens delivers.

It's possible to place lens elements very close to the sensor, even when making long focal lengths, in the space that would otherwise be occupied by the mirror box in a DSLR. This gives the lens designers a new and even greater degree of freedom in designing the lens for mirrorless cameras, that they don't have with a DSLR. We may yet have to see this advantage come into full fruition for the design of long focal lengths. It's not like DSLR lenses are bad, far from it, but another degree of design freedom is added for mirrorless.

Talking about 110mm...Is there any other 110mm prime ever produced?

Most famous is the classic CZ Planar 110/2 for Hassy. I believe it was an F lens (no central shutter), so adapting it is particularly easy. For 135 format, the CZ P100/2 C/Y is likely to be a better choice—unless you plan a crazy tilt/shift rig!

This announcement of the 21 just made me buy a A7. That and the CV 40 and the low price of the A7 😁. Have to save hard though 😏.

"For the compact 21 mm, the VM mount "COLOR - SKOPAR 21 mm F 4 P" has been lineuped, but for the convenience of the lens type, color coverage of the peripheral part occurs in digital cameras (it is said that it has the best oblique incidence characteristics at the present time It was inevitable even by the Leica M10 which is broken). To solve this problem, this lens is newly designed for Sony E mount.

As a depiction tendency, there is also an image of Colorace Kopper, the contrast is intense, a depiction rather a little stiff rather than soft. It seems that we decided the specification of the opening F3.5 after we decided the target of the size of the lens barrel, and the performance is also stable because the open F value is suppressed."

So now you know.
