The pre-order link goes to a "Page not found" error again. I hope they're not messing around with his stock because everyone's on the CV bandwagon now. From what I've seen over the years, if it weren't for Stephen, Cosina would be now be struggling for brand recognition here in the States. I know I purchased my first CV lens from him, many, many moons ago when he still had brand new APO-Lanthar 180's in K-mount.

I found this engineering drawing on the photoblogger's site here. If I'm not mistaken, Cosina's claiming three FLE's, so I assume those are the rear three and everything else extends the closer you focus. If so, that is a lot lens dangling off the mount on a long tube. Tighten up those mount screws, boys.

Novoflex makes a tripod foot that might work. It's hard to tell from just photos.

Hi Folks,

I had some incorrect information which I acted upon thinking it was "better safe than sorry," cancelling orders rather than risking I would not deliver them on time.

It turns out we are happily still on for August delivery. I sent out emails to the cancelled orders, reinstating their order status if by credit card, asking them to order again it they were already refunded by paypal.

The pre-order link is now working again. Sorry for the false alarm folks, I just wanted to make sure we kept the predicted delivery date!

Best to all,
Stephen

Confused by this statement....as they already have lots of wide angle lenses for FE mount.

If you're talking about the three Heliars, I thought those were M lenses with refitted FE mounts. Do those things even work on a non-Kolari Sony? At least the FL 40/1.2 Nokton is a purpose-designed FE optic. I'm as eager as anyone for a C/V WA selection that performs to their film standards. A reissue of the 28/3.5 brass-barrel Color Skopar with Sony sensor corrections would be awesome. I tire of waiting for the Loxia 28—which will be too large anyway.

As far as the UWA's go, if you have a Kolari-modded sensor, you're better off going with the M-mounts. There is a difference in the way they're assembled to account for the different sensor types. I suspect the same is true for the 40, another lens they offer in both e and m mounts, but haven't used one yet.

If you simply remove the sensor cover, the camera becomes near sighted due to the increased optical path length. The same happens if you replace the stock sensor cover with a thin one, though not to the same degree. The path length in glass is shorter than in air, due to the refraction index. Since the light rays in the periphery travel at an angle compared to the centre, an additional effect is incurred on the path length, when the lens and cover glass isn't matched, astigmatism..

There are good reasons for a thick cover glass, like Sony, since it's easier to guarrantee excellent suppression of IR in visible light photography and selection of material is easier. The M9 had an issue with corrosion and Lloyd Chambers has shown the M240 to not have a total suppression of IR.

Yes, assuming you're using a native mount lens, but the e-mount CV's and the M-mount CVs aren't exactly the same lenses. The e-mounts have been tuned for the Sony sensor and the M's for Leica's sensor. Just as the M-Biogon 35 and Planar 50 were tuned for Sony when they rebranded them Loxias.

Life is compromise. I'll take the minor I/R contamination and continue to use my film-era lenses.

I'm aware that E mount and VM mount Voigtländers and ZM and Loxias are optically different. Thing is, if you use an M mount VM or ZM lens via an adapter on a stock Sony camera, and subsequently modify your camera with a thin sensor cover, you may also have to modify your adapter or remove shims to fully enjoy the benefits of the new thin cover sensor mod, alternattively re-adjust the camera mount to sensor distance.

The Loxia 35/2 and 50/2 should have been redesigned to better account for the sensor cover and effects of astigmatism. I suspect that the modification done when the ZM 35/2 ans 50/2 were modiied were sufficient only in the centre of the image.

Now I see what you're saying, but Kolari will shim the sensor for you. You can even send them an adapted lens for proper adjustment.

I don't disagree with you on the 35 and 50, though, my guess is that's as much as they were willing to spend (in both cash and effort) to release two MF lenses for a mount that hadn't gained much market traction at that point.

I ran a number of tests with my Kolari modded A7r with different lenses including my newly purchased Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ZM lens after getting my camera back. We couldn't figure out at the time if there was problem with the lens, the Leica M to NEX adapters, or the camera itself. I sent the camera, adapter, and lens back to Kolari. Ilija, the owner of Kolari, had his staff check everything. Kolari hadn't done anything wrong and there was nothing wrong with the lens or the adapter. Kolari found that Sony had installed the camera sensor incorrectly so that we couldn't get the corners in sharp focus; Sony had installed the sensor so that it was not aligned parallel to the camera. So, Kolari reshimmed the camera sensor so that it had the correct parallel orientation. No additional charge for the additional work. Saved me from tearing my hair out too.

There were other reasons, too, but that's mainly what kept me from buying the Sony, and so I've been following the advent of this lens with great interest. I remain interested in this lens, but the 65mm I bought in order to avoid playing Sony Roulette removes all hurry.

However, the new Arsenal camera controller is now threatening to finally ship. If the Arsenal focus stacks as advertised, that feature would bring me back to the Roulette table for the AF in the Sony 90.

One can always hand stack and use 3rd party software for stacking. Also Arsenal is said to support MF lenses for focus stacking and will provide a combined image in DNG format--it is a bit more fussy though. A good solution may to have both lenses.

We agree. I thought that Kolari, or the one doing the mod, would have to do shim the sensor, but I've have never had a camera modified.

Sometimes procrastination and the resulting "backordered" time is a good thing . . . for the credit card balance
