Unless one needs the extra speed, I'm finding the Sony 35 2.8 to be an excellent travel lens.

I think a lot of people feel like they want something in between the Sony 35/1.4 and 35/2.8 options. The f1.4 is too big, and the f2.8 is too slow and/or people don't love the OOF rendering. Something in between these extremes would be nice (and a bit larger than the f2.8 is fine).

Back on the topic of the Tamron, this lens just skirts the right side of "small enough" to be intruiguing to me. I currently cover this range with two primes, the 28/2 and 55/1.8 (and I suppose my 24-240 in a pinch). But I can't deny the convenience of a zoom.

I'm seriously spoiled now with the 12-24 and the 24-105 for sharpness and versatility. They're both sharp wide open all the way to the corners at every focal length. If the Tamron is as sharp as the 24-105 at f/4, it might be worth it to make the change to save the 100 grams weight difference (only 100 grams!), but it's a trade off with the loss in focal range.

It's awesome to have choices!

I'm blown away every time I take pics with the 24-105 now. It would be hard for the Tamron to beat the image quality, but I'm open to the possibility.

I had the original 28-75 for my canon 5d years ago and it was a killer sharp lens...

I'm not sure how one defines "killer sharp", but if the new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is anything like the old one, it may just turn out to be just a slightly faster substitute for the Sony FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens...

Of course take it with a grain of salt, but they say it's nothing like the old, it's all new and built to compete with the 24-105. Given their other recent releases, they have enough proof to think it's at least possible/probable.

I hope you're right... but we'll have to wait and see.

the old version was last released in like 2010 or something? i'd like to believe that it'll be a modern design, like the 24-70 g2, which is a decent piece of glass, afaik.

I'm also hoping Tamron is designing their lens from the ground up and making some small and sharp primes at a decent price. The 28-75mm is a good start.

This lens collaboration thing can get pretty confusing. Tamron licensed to design Zeiss lenses, Leica Elmarit on a Panasonic camera, Cosina, Kyocera, etc. etc. Lots of stuff made in China, but Sigma lenses are still made in Japan.

There is no pricing or estimated availability.
Since there aren't fully functional copies floating around for reviews, I think it may take a while...

I dunno, on a lot of recent releases we haven’t know testers were floating around until the review embargo was lifted. Rumors based on comments from Tamron reps was April/May I believe.

SAR has first couple of samples posted. Sharpness looks pretty exceptional, bokeh looks somewhat mediocre. Still interested, definitely look forward to more reviews.

If the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 with stabilization for Canon/Nikon is listed for $1199, I wouldn't be surprised if the 28-75 for Sony will be listed below $1000...

I saw a demo one at the photography show over here - never thought to check the size but I’d say 67 very likely - a lot slimmer than the 24-105

GMPhotography wrote:
Okay this is very unscientific but hey worth a look and see if it makes some sense.

If you look at the video posted earlier stop it at about 8 seconds in. Pay attention to the lens mount size and the front of the lens diameter . If you look closely they are almost the same size in diameter . Now look at the images posted here 67,72,77 now IGNORE the barrel on each lens just look at the mount and the front filter size.

The second image posted i have a 67mm hood in reverse over the mount and it looks
