I'm pretty certain that the tamron can do in body firmware updates, similar to how the sony lenses update. Less headaches than having to pay for a dock.

Well I did pre-order but not at the very beginning so I have no expectation when it will arrive. Have to admit I thought about cancelling several times since I really don't need this at the moment. I have the 24-70 GM.
It is more of a curiosity to me that I want to try. If it proves to be a good value I will put it into my travel kit. if not I will send it back. I had given some thought to a 24-105/4 which, on my Canon, I was very happy to use but have always appreciated the extra stop. Who knows maybe this will be a unique price/performance trade-off for the ages or may be not. Only time will tell. Will continue to follow here to see what others think.

I picked up my lens as well. Liking it a lot so far, handling and balance are very nice and everything looks good on the viewfinder at least. Just took some random shots in Shinjuku on the way to station with my A9. Will share some samples later today. Now heading to work.

Thanks! Really liking this lens so far I like the ability to use it for very close distance shots at any focal length as well as for generic street / walkaround shooting. The color output looks nice and natural to my eyes and I like the bokeh too. It's also pretty sharp all around. Lots of fun to shoot with. I hope it works in low light city scenes too, haven't tried that yet.

Are you suggesting that the Tamron might be equal to the 24-70GM and 24-105G (and by extension, other fine mid-range zooms such as the Canon 24-70/2.8L II)? That would be truly amazing in an $800 lens.

For now, from the limited test photos and MTF charts I've seen, the Tamron looks excellent in center, but much weaker on sides/edges.
I was willing to accept such performance from the native Zony 24-70/4 OSS due to its excellent color and contrast (and compact size/weight). But even there, I sold it after getting the 24-105G that was so much better overall.
I'll be happy to be proven wrong! I'm all for great values in imaging.

I'll be doing some quick testing against the CY 35-70 when mine comes in, probably will also check against the 28/2 on the wide end. I'd agree with your assessment, which is why I hate charts and numbers, but sometimes they don't lie!

I think dealer availability might be a couple days behind. Talked to the manager of the shop I bought from, Tamron is shipping direct to them, they said they'd be sending them this week, so likely leaving the Tamron distributor today/tomorrow, and leaving the retailers early next week.
Looks like that shop as 1 left if anyone is still interested.

yes, the MTF's point to it, somewhere between the 24-105 and 24-70gm.
it's not exactly straight forward as the tamron's optimized right in the middle while the 24-70gm is optimized for the wide.
Juha's samples shows that it's a clear notch up from the 24-70 f4, and very competent, at least on the A9.
