Do you think those of us who want to purchase this lens should wait for a new batch of shipment? It's great that Sony is fixing the defective units, but I would prefer not having to send in a brand new lens for repairs, especially because shipping to Texas with insurance is well over a $100.

Although Sony will pay for shipping both ways and they turn it around fast, I agree that it is better to wait for the new batch and avoid any hassle.

Unfortunately, unless Roger is able to get an inside peek, I suspect we'll never know what the problem stems from.
Well, whatever I figure it out myself, I'm allowed to talk about. If they tell me, then I can't. I figured out it wasn't anything to do with the optics. Other than that I can say it should be a very straightforward simple fix.

It’s easy enough to know if it’s a good copy or not. You’ll know as soon as you take shot at 105mm @ f/8. Mfd or infinity, it doesn’t really matter. If it’s bad it will be blurry and out of focus. If it’s good, it appears to be very good. So shoot around and try it out in the store. You’ll know.

It looks like something inside got moved by accident while the aperture blades were closing down. Something like that. I'm more concerned that someone's flawed unit is not included in the repair program.

Hahaha... unless the 'hush money' is too good to pass up!
What if If you fill your S/N in on the Sony web page and it says your lens is not one of those that is affected, but you believe that your lens is indeed affected? Has anyone experienced this yet?

I believe Sony has clearly identified the source of the problem so you either have the issue or you don't based on your serial number. I'd say that your lens could have some other problem though but I don't know why you would worry about it much since every 24-105 should be within the warranty period.

There's no guarantee Sony has precisely the right range. Maybe post pictures of the problem if you want additional opinions. Or, contact Sony. Or, return and report the lens as "defective" and try again.

Maybe I am just a bit cynical, I would like to thank everyone in particular roger for help on this threat. I mention roger because I have serious doubts sony would have taken this seriously had he not participated.

An update for my SEL24105G that I sent back to Sony on the focus shift problem. The Sony repair facility in Canada advised Sony to replace the lens. I got a call from the Sony U.S. warehouse this morning that they don't have stock, and irrespective or my willingness to wait, they've opted to issue me a refund for the purchase price. Seems like an odd way to handle the situation. Anyone else sent their lens in and received a response from Sony?

Odd. I would think they would ask what you want to do. Seems they have a real problem but since there are a number of lenses that are good, they should know what the problem was/is.

It may be easier for Sony to replace them all than repair then in an sufficiently timely manner. People wouldn't be happy waiting months for their new lens to be fixed.
I wonder if a ton of discounted, warrantied, remanufactured inventory will be glutting the market late this year...
(I'd buy.)

Just ordered one from BHPhoto on Feb 26 and it just arrived today. Luckily, it's not part of the affected lenses, but going to take some photos this weekend with it. Super silent.

Well, here in Germany, after two months of waiting for the lens to ship I got it last week and tested it out today for focus shift. Serial number is 1822259, has major focus shift problems.
