p.1 #1 · One Wintery Day in Yellowstone National Park
For years I have wanted to visit Yellowstone for a winter shoot. I have been to the park once during the summer months, but was not enamored with what I saw. Put off by the crowds of snap shooters and surreal reckless behaviors, I decided to wait for a winter opportunity before making a return trip. Because I am a teacher, I have been limited by student schedules for my entire working life. In September I made a snap decision to bundle some personal days and find a way to get to Yellowstone. Sadly, I only managed to put together two full days of shooting, but my time in the dead quiet of winter was an absolute blast... I had so much fun on this one snowy day during my brief stay, that I desperately hope to go back and spend more time hiking the park during the winter months...
I'll share four standouts for now and will likely post a second set in the future... for now, it's bison and one coyote shot.
thanks for giving these a look,
bruce

It was a hoot... I recommend this experience for anyone who enjoys the photographic simplicity that winter can offer.

Excellent work and superb composition on these shots.
Thanks Louie... this is my favorite type of photography... just a few simple elements on which to concentrate.

Bruce, the second shot is just excellent, lots of texture in the snowfall. Definitely a wall hanger!

Thanks pliukait... this was one of the first pics that I chose to print when I returned from my brief excursion.

That looks very peaceful, but you can have that cold weather ~ Ron
The cold is tough to endure, but it is the weather that keeps the people away and allows for a more contemplative photographic experience.

Hey Bruce,
These are spectacular! Well done indeed. 3 & 4 are my favorites.
It really was a wonderful trip. I went with the intention of only shooting landscapes...if critters got in the pics, great. But I wish I had brought a longer lens along.

Wonderful experience and captures.
Thanks... I live in cold, snowy and occasionally desolate MN, buy my current home does not hold a candle to drama of a Yellowstone winter.

Thanks for sharing these ! I too want to visit Yellowstone in the winter, hopefully in the next year or two !
Lovely images
Thank you!
Do it! If you enjoy photographing simple elements, contrasting tones and the harsh elements of a North American winter, Yellowstone is a must see place to focus those lenses!

Looking forward to your next post from there.
Cheers,

Thank you David!
It was a really great trip despite the brevity of our stay and the uncertainty of the government shutdown. A three day tour barely scratched my itch . I am looking to do a self-guided trip next year, as I think I am going to "base-camp" in one of the park's lodges with the hope to spend one night camping... it will be frightfully cold, but this is an experience I'd like to have before I decide that my aging body won't be able to handle it.
As for my own shooting habits, I shot a fairly equal mix of wildlife and landscapes... I just wish I had a bit more time to work the light at the edges of dawn and dusk.

bruce
