There were four and all were a little cheaper, but they were all from newly launched retailers. One was priced at $2600. I attempted to converse with the seller, but they were very slow to respond. I decided against it because Amazon only guarantees your money back up to $2500. Just FYI.
Personally I don't trust open box items, at least not for the minuscule discount they offer (well under 10%). You will never know what happened to it or why it was returned, and I'm far too anal to have that weighing on my mind all the time haha. I've also worked in retail long enough to see some of the ridiculous things customers do to items, then end up getting a manager to take it back for a refund.
If anything I prefer refurbs, because the discounts are much deeper and they get an extra level of QC before being sold.

So Open Box is not used i.e. not returned (or is it?) And it's not a demo.
Guessing here that Open Box means it was bought and returned. It would seem that Demo may be more desirable in their hierarchy.
I almost always buy used, and this one was 10% off. If anything is wrong, I should be able to figure it out quickly, and B and H has a generous return policy. I am pretty high strung myself, but I trust B and H.

Received the camera last night. Physically, it appears to be flawless. According to camerashuttercount.com, the shutter count is 58 (after I took the 10 or so obligatory photos of the cat). So far, then, it appears worth the 10% discount I got buying open-box. Although the weather is not going to be great, I'll test it out more this weekend.

Not necessarily. Demo units are handled by thousands of people and if it's a current model, one has to wonder why it's no longer wanted by the store as a demo unit. An Open Box can theoretically be someone who bought and had buyer's remorse (or an angry spouse) and returned it. It could also be someone who used the camera and returned it but if you buy one and it has too many shutter actuations, you can always return it. Or it could be a unit that was opened at the counter and a buyer decided they didn't want it.

Speaking only for B&H, almost all the store demo hardware we have on display comes from our vendors, including US distributors like Nikon USA or Canon USA. When a demo camera, lens etc has reached the end of its useful life it is returned to the vendor or distributor who provided it and (usually) replaced.
