Went out to test the loaner I got from Sony

So C1 has no specific profile but if you use Manufactuer Profile there is a lens correction and its a big difference. I can see the hard vignette.

Check this out. Now I will just keep the profile in as thats how we would use the lens anyway. It cleans up very nicely as you can see.

At 28mm its better than at 24 and for those folks looking for a great 28mm we just found it. Case closed

Looks to me and this is very critical 29mm and 50mm are the best focal lengths in the corners wide open. Just found my two missing lenses the 28/50. IM BUYING

That 24mm vignette in the upper-right doesn't seem right.

I've used two copies, and in both cases the profile completely eliminated the vignette at 24mm. In your shot, it's gone in the other three corners, but not upper-right. Were you using the hood (I know you usually don't).

No hood on it. All I can think of it’s not a specific profile like other lenses in C1 . It’s called a manufacturer profile. So it could be somewhat generic. It could use a little more correction as it still has a touch of barrel still

Sorry, I should have mentioned that even with the specific profile in Lightroom that bit of vignetting is still there.

Good to know. I might just replace my "all prime" kit with this zoom in future and just keep 85/1.8 for portraits.

I get vignetting on mine at times and then don't (at same f stop). It is like the software works and then doesn't kick in. Haven't figured it out yet.

Yes, for sure! The 24-105/4G @24-35mm is really amazing from center to corners wide-open! Starting at 50mm, it only needs f/5.6.

Now, there is something I am still scratching my head. I tested my copy multiple times at infinity and 20-30 feet (like Big Bronco) and my lens does not benefit when stopping down f/4 to f/5.6 or f/8 at the wide range. Actually at f/8, I already see signs of diffraction when viewing at high magnifications like 1:1 or 2:1.

That's for the corners but it's also true for center and mid-areas where the improvement is almost nil....Not sure how that's even possible but I'm not complaining.

Guy's Big Bronco test shows a noticeable improvement going from wide open to smaller apertures. Chuck's infinity tests also show improvement but to a lesser degree.
Thanks for posting Guy!

I'm waiting for less haze to take new samples and post it on the board.

In actual practice now I notice an improvement to around 5.6 and 8. I don't understand the differences from what you say and various lenses. The more I have put this lens to use though, in practical use, it is proving good.

Fred,

I didn't see the info in here, but could this have to do with field curvature and where you and Guy focused for your respective test images?

I'm used to somewhat compensating for FC by focusing a bit off center most of the time, but if you focused purely in the center and Guy didn't (or vice-versa) it could produce different results.

The other possibility is that the subject distance is still different enough between your tests that FC is affecting one more than the other. Since yours are effectively infinity, and Big Bronco is somewhat shorter (I'd consider it mid-field personally), there may be enough difference in field geometry to cause a difference.

The consensus seems to be that the lens performs best at Infinity, then IQ degrades as the focus distance is decreased.

Interesting. I focused slightly above center that horizontal strip above the big bronco words. Also I focused manual at F4 than shot the series. Also remember I’m moving backwards at each focal length. At 105 I shot half the building because of a wall behind me.

So I am varying the distance . I’d say from 24-70 by about 30 ft
