Notice how happy she is to move now that I am gone? Just keep it up T, I'm taking notes and checking them twice. Be prepared for a lump of very large coal this year...

Atl, not sure why you would say a "lowly" XSi, from everything I've seen it is a very capable camera and anything ending in "2.8" is always good.

I see they are tighter but don't be afraid to really crop the heck out of them for posting purposes.

I guess I am going to have to see if I can attend one of the Titan's camps. I do have an in (anyone remember Ingle Martin, formerly of Florida?) he hunts with several of my guys and is by the office on a weekly basis. I'm hoping he will be able to get me on the sidelines of one of the lesser games...

Sounds more like the guy next to you was doing the spray and pray technique and really just making a lot of work for himself in having to sort through a lot of junk to find one keeper. A lot can be said for the Mark III's ability to shoot bursts - and even more can be said about what you're going to have to do with all that stuff in the wee hours or the morning while you're married to Lightroom or PS3.
I found myself only using the 10 shot/90 second burst mode once here at AirVenture - and that was to show off next to my good friend Rodolfo - who is stuck with shooting with his Nikons. I one shot clicked my way through about 15,000 images over the last 4 days and will still have more work to do than i like.
Shot with a 600 and the 1DsMark III all day on Thursday, used my 300 on the 1Ds Mark III on Friday and spent the better part of Saturday using the 800 on my Mark III. What an experience! If one of these lenses is in your future - better buy a membership to Gold's Gym if you think you're going to hand hold these beasts. ... and that's is the only way you can shoot moving subjects with erratic flight patterns. Monopods and Wimberlys just don't cut it!

Nice shots at training camp guys...I need to make it down there sometime.

I shot baseball all day yesterday. The MKIII and 70-200 performed very well. So much for the MKIII being temp sensitive. It go so hot out there I could hardly touch it. Focus was spot on. Hope to get copies of what I shot on Monday.

JB - Would love to know if you thought about that 17-40...I forgot I am going to MI this Thursday...

See ya...

Dave - that's what the 17-55 f/2.8 is for. I kinda want one of those, myself.

By the way, GT summer practices should be going full swing now... they're open to the public. lowbyte and myself shot there some last year - good practice to get back in the swing of tracking things and such.

JB & JU (but to all really) have you read the new Rob Galbraith focus article? How does it compare to what you guys are seeing?

I'm thinking that between JB's burst shooting of planes and JU's wide open static shots we ought to be able to get a good comparison.

thanks, Mark

i've read those articles and i just wonder if its due to the camera just doing too much too quickly...

i could be way off, but its just an idea... basically focusing the lens is STILL a mechanical task, so perhaps in AI Servo focusing during a 10 fps burst, the camera is incorrectly focusing during one or two of the shots... thats basically what i can see happening based on those sample image movies that i'm seeing... i mean you can blame that as AI accuracy, but seriously maybe the camera just doesn't know how to perfectly control these zoom lenses, sounds like it isn't as big of a deal with non telephotos?

again just a theory, i'm no expert..

I don't know, the image sequences with the 300 were pretty bad. I think that the focusing algorithms are mostly to blame along with the higher frame rates. That, plus the mirror flopping around in there must be a hard issue to deal with. That is one of the reasons I hope the regular 1 series stays at a 1.3x sensor size although I really would like to see it go to a 1.6x sensor size.

I shot a ton of pics this week - maybe 12 to 15,000 - somewhere in there. I haven't really begun to go through any of them - so keeper rate and focus has yet to be determined. Plus I used a 1DS Mark III, a iDs Mark II, my 20D, another Mark III and my Mark III. Add to that having no experience with the 600 and 800mm lenses - so that keeper rate should understandably be very low - just due to framing and hand holding an 800 at 1/80 of a second. I also used the 100-400 a lot.

I can say both 600 and 800 were very fast to acquire focus - the 800 was especially fast. The 300 performed flawlessly - or at least as well as I expected it to - it is a great lens!

and... i tend to shoot on one shot - not servo - and i tend to shoot on one shot at a time instead of burst mode. I wasn't really interested in how many i could shoot sharply in a sequence - since i had already proven that to my satisfaction at Falcons camp earlier last week.

I know i have a ton of blurry shots - but blurry due to camera movement due to failing arm muscles - more so than the camera not working correctly. But like I said - I haven't even looked at the vast majority of shots and it will be months before I have to time to figure out what happened and why.

I saw the Galbraith report - when it came across - but haven't read it thoroughly and I don't know whether he was using a blue dot, green dot or yellow dot body. Too many variables and too little information.
Regardless of what he says though - i would buy either another 1 D Mark III or a 1 Ds Mark III and not worry about it - they are great cameras.

I just read through it....he used several bodies through out the color dot range. Some as new as April of this year. His conclusions and my experience with the camera differ...but I don't shoot like he explains....Over all...I am very, very happy with my camera. If shot pro sports...or even the level of sports that he does I may feel differently. For me...this camera does more than I could expect out of it.

Here are some of what I did this weekend....

Nice shots JU,

JB, I will be curious to see some of your shots, I will bet you had a blast.

Although I had to read it a couple of times I thought RG did a good job of explaining exactly how he shoots and how the various iterations of the MKIII and the DsMKIII did. For me, I tend to shoot much like RG does although I don't usually use AI Servo for portrait type shots. I'm still not real sure why he does that except for maybe he likes AI servo for sports and forgets to change it from single shot...

I was pretty set on making the move but after reading his review and exchanging e-mails with others that shoot faster sports I think I will stick the the MKIIn's for at least this football season.

The part that is killing me is that RG, and others, say when it is on, it is brilliant...

The only thing that I got out of the article is that the MKIII produces the best files ever.

I do not shoot like he does, so even when I am shooting baseball...like I did this past weekend...I am never shooting in burst mode. I am more of a timing shooter. Now...I was shooting 14-15 year old kids...who are not the fastest out there...but they are not the slowest either.

I have no doubt that what RG is saying is true....but for me and my style of shooting the MKIII is the best camera that I have ever used. Bar none.

Mark - Do you mean to cover the whole flash unit? If so..not this Q39...at least the one that I have doesn't have that.
