Just went out on a short break to do some testing at 5.6-8.0 of some stuff at infinity. Also did a couple shots at f/16. Haven't taken them into post yet but just from looking at the zoomed in details on cam, the edges are not the best. Usable at f/16 and a clear improvement but definitely plenty of detail loss and smearing at the outer edges between 5.6-8.0.
That being said, I personally don't have any intentions of using this as a landscape lens or for shooting at apertures any smaller than about f/2. It will basically live at 1.1-1.4 for my uses.
Side note, I am certain now that the rig won't achieve focus at 5.6 and smaller in AF. ...Show more →
ever try the optosigma filters?
if the lens had usable edges, the appeal would be much higher IMO. Doesnt even have to be super sharp.
Edges from the Mitakon, 50L, 50 1.2 AIS, all are fine, but those lenses are all significantly bigger I think.

Haven't tried and not really versed on them. Any chance you have a good link for a specific one?
Agreed regarding the 50L and Mitakon. The edges are much better on both but both present other downsides. Funny how these 50s work though. I can probably be content owning 30 of them and finding justifications for why I love each. lol.

I love the way that one tall palm tree is so defined. Is this shot in LA or Bakersfield? Because normally this type of scene that is clear to the horizon doesn't happen with our air quality.
Shot is in Bakersfield. I seldom go back to LA anymore these days. lol. I will say though, the air is supposed to be much worse here since we are in the valley but we lucked out with some rain recently.

John, thanks to your "horny horse weed" inspiration, i finally got this lens.
Welcome to the club! Initial thoughts/findings?
Side note- In case anyone thinks Bubble and I are up to some weird stuff (we're not), a wide open sample was requested and the bottle below was the quickest subject I could find.
Side note 2: It's a good pre-workout...amongst other things.
Ha, I also just acquired a Nikon 50mm 1.2 Ai-S! I had one previously and it was pretty bad. This new I got has a newer serial number with a 2005 and up factory run and it's pretty good wide open. I bought for a bit cheaper than the 7Artisans 50mm 1.1 lens brand new.
A couple things I noticed. Wide open performance is more subtle, but definitely dreamy. The 7Artisans is more dramatic at wide open apertures. Nikon colors are neutral, but contrast is much better than the 7Artisans. Stopped down the lens just gets better, while the 7Artisans doesn't really get very interesting. My major pet peeve with the 7Artisans is that it has a de-clicked aperture ring.
They're both very different, though I'd have to go with the Nikon as being more well-rounded. The Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 SL-II is also very good and you really can't go wrong with any of these lenses. They all have their charms and it really depends on what look you're trying to achieve!

Agreed. All these 50s have their pros and cons. The beauty of it all is that this just means they all have unique character making them worthy of owning all together. lol.
It is true that the 7A is not necessarily great as an all-rounder since it doesn't improve a ton as the aperture gets smaller amongst other (perceived) flaws.
That being said, I have gone back and forth with using my various 50s as of late and have still consistently thrown the 7A back on for some reason. While I can get what I need with most of my 50s, the 7A just pumps out images that work for me. Admittedly though, I am only ever shooting it from wide open to 1.4.

Anyone find a hood for this lens. The B+W 55mm rubber hood vignettes.
The Haoge square hood I got works find for the way that I shoot it. The vignetting doesn't really become an issue until you get to the smaller apertures. At 1.1-1.4 though, it is a non-issue (from my uses).

Your best bet is to use a 55mm to 58mm step up ring and use a bigger hood.
This appears to be the only way to get one truly free of any (added) vignetting.

Who needs a hood? . Let the flare in!
Seriously, I find the front element is recessed enough I'm not concerned about bumping it, and if there is stray light... there's usually another way to solve it with your hand, or changing composition, or just accepting some interesting stray light artifacts.
Been enjoying the 7A so much on the A9 that I forgot to consider that I should try it on my Fuji also. lol.
Being a tinkerer, I decided to order an LM to FX adapter the other day which arrived this morning. No chance to shoot yet but figured I'd share.
