I have noticed the focus issue and have been taking a few shots of anything I want to make sure I want. That isn't good and I posted somewhere else that I hope Sony can figure out the bugs and get this fixed. In a dynamic situation, this could cause lost shots and that isn't good.
To clarify, I get some images that are just plain out of focus and then refocus and it is in. Not camera shake etc, just something off and I think it has to be a bug that hopefully Sony will clean up in a firmware update.

I downloaded both photos and see you're talking about. The second photo looks like a lens element was tilted. I've seen this happen on image-stabilized lenses.
I still think this is a element grouping that’s getting out of whack by the linear focusing rail and occasionally gets shifted or tilted when either zooming or focusing. Honestly it’s the only thing that makes some sense. My loaner did none of this. If it was focus shift we all would have the same issue. This is too sporadic for that.

It's possible although I think it's more likely to be the IS element.
Well I can see my other lenses, as I use them going on and off of my A7RII but the 24-105 staying on the A7RIII most all the time. For me, a few focus issues aside, it will be the real workhorse and I am very glad Sony came out with this! Size, balance and most of the time, image quality, makes it just about a dream lens.
Teething troubles, the plague of new technology. They'll get it fixed, prob working hard at it right now.
It'll be a big success, it's their most important lens to popularize the system. They look good, beating Canon at the first try. At 660 grams, it is the same weight as the camera bodies. 600 grams is the target weight for medium-sized lenses for Sony a7x.
I just tested the FE 24-105/4 G zoom against all my primes and I'm super impressed.
I tested it against these lenses:
1) 12-24/4G @ 24mm (Not a prime lens and 24mm is its weakest FL)
2) FE 35/2.8 ZA (Outstanding prime lens. It only loses to the ZM 35/1.4 + PCX 5m but it's still better at mid-field)
3) CV 35/1.7 + PCX 5m (Another outstanding prime. Better than the best Loxia 35/2 copy I had...and I tried many. It still has slight smearing towards the very edge but it's outstanding center and mid)
4) Loxia 50/2 (Super lens that really shows the goods starting at f/5.6)
5) FE 55/1.8 ZA (Only loses in contrast to the Loxia. Amazing at f/5.6)
6) CV 65/2 (This is probably the best lens for the E-mount. It is crazy sharp and contrasty)
7) Batis 135/2.8 (Same as the lens above. )
The above lenses are IMO the best lenses available for the E-mount system that are not terribly big. Having said all that, the zoom didn't get intimidated. It is not better than any of them but it's surprisingly not too far behind...
I already compared them but need to organize the crops for demonstration. I will start a new threads and post all 1:1 crops at infinity showing center, mid and edges.
I just saw the comparison with the ZM 85/4. Well, this lens is outstanding at f/5.6 and f/6.3. Just as good as the Loxia 85/2.4 at these apertures. The zoom had a little trouble towards the corners in comparison.

It's a bit specialized for me but I do use it for portraits, action and landscapes. I don't love the manual focus by wire but really like having AF at this FL.
Today I returned my Sony FE 24-105 to the store and ordered a new one in another store, because they did not have copies for exchange.I will let you know how a new copy works when I receive a parcel with new 24-105. I hope this time it will be good.
Thanks, Fred. It's (the Batis 135) a lens I thought a lot about buying, but I don't do a lot of portraiture. I actually considered it more as a light telephoto to use while traveling...I have the 70-300 but it's a bit heavy. The Batis is probably too pricey to buy for such a limited application in my hands.

I'm having the exact same issue with my FE 24-105 F/4 on an A7RIII with firmware 1.01.
For some reason, I seem to consistently get more of these issues at a shutter speed of 1/60 than any other shutter speed combination. The focal length doesn't matter too much, but it's easier to see the longer the lens is zoomed in of course. Wondering if I should file a warranty claim/issue with my retailer, as the lens seems unreliable, and I'm tired of having to fire off 2-3 shots for each image I want to make, and study them and select the sharpest one in post.
