I just tested continuous mode and the results were the same: full 14-bit for uncompressed RAW, ~13-bit (basically as many bits as compression allows) for compressed RAW.
This surprised me slightly as I'm sure Sony said that continuous shooting was only 12-bit for compressed RAW.
To double check my methods were accurate I tested bulb mode (using EFCS as you can't shoot bulb with ES), uncompressed RAW. It came out at 12-bit as expected.
So aside from the rolling shutter implications, and a few restrictions (can't use bulb, can't use anti-flickr, can't use bracketing) it seems the ES is much more usable compared to the A7RII, which is good because I use it a lot for certain things....Show more →
Thanks for doing this. I do wonder why the heck you can’t get full 14-bit with bracketing in ES.

Ugh. No indication I'll be receiving my pre-ordered a7R3 in Vancouver Canada any time soon. I've got to stop following this thread. It's driving me nuts.

I was just trying out the camera today with a few streets shots with both myself and the subject moving and saw very little(if any) of the rolling shutter problem. I think ES is going to be fine for sort of event/documentary work I do though I have tested it yet in fluorescent lighting.

Wait what? Can't bracket in silent shooting/electronic shutter?
To me one of the biggest reasons to upgrade is the ability to to set drive to bracket 3 exposures, +0-, on silent shooting and get 14 bits. Can you confirm that this workflow won't indeed be possible?

I don’t have the camera. Here is what the user guide states, however:
“Bracket shooting is unavailable during silent shooting when [File Format] is set to [RAW] or [RAW & JPEG] and [RAW File Type] is set to [Uncompressed].”

God damnit Sony: no PlayMemories Apps (touchless shutter, SR and timelapse), no bracket+silent shooting+uncompressed and no option to disable spatial filtering.
I am going to upgrade sooner or later but those issues are really annoying.

... so no Uncompressed Raw apparently.
Sorry guys I got this wrong, the guide is right (I thought it was just ES that wouldn't let me turn bracketing on but I've checked and it is ES plus uncompressed RAW doing that).

Thanks for the info.
Yeah I'm annoyed too, as silent shutter + uncompressed RAW + exposure bracketing seemed perfect for longer focal length landscape shots.
On the whole though I'm really happy with the A7RIII, so I'll be looking into any possible workarounds.

Hey Matt, do you know of any remote control that has the time lapse functionality, remote triggering and exp. comp. ? Even if it is cabled.

Yeah, the 'cons' list is odd. 'Cons' Usually menas reasons to look at other alternatives. Like:
"•Cannot switch to video mode while buffer is clearing". Ok, So we cannot do this. Maybe we should look at a different camera?
While, we're at it, they don't mention the obvious (but small) cons:
Lower resolution than competition A
Higher base ISO and lower FWC than competition B
Yes, I know that competition A and B has other drawbacks, but the small but obvious drawbacks are often listed there.
So I think the 'cons' list is odd.
Nikons ISO 64 or Canon 50MP neither of those are a good reason to buy Nikon or Canon.
both Nikon and Canon have much much more serious flaws to be overlooked.

Baffling, right? If the r3 had included apps I'd have ordered one first thing. For now tho, I'll wait, save my cash and decide what to do in the Spring. I hope Sony comes to its senses..

To add to the list of annoying things, shooting HLG stills are also not possible with the electronic shutter for some reason I can't understand. Which is pity since I want to use it for perfect raw exposure like DPR points out. Which means back to UniWB and green viewfinder if I want silent shooting...
Can someone knock some sense into the heads of the Sony engineers?

Do people really think is easy to design a camera that pleases 100% of the users No matter what Sony adds or doesn't, someone will always have an issue with it.

Well, ISO 64 gives some of the same IQ advantage as moving to Medium Format, and people are upgrading here to get 14 bits files, among other things. One feature alone is not a good reason for anything, but everything counts. And it must be frustrating to hear that enlightened, well-informed photographers actually buy Canon to get 50 MP, among other things. (like 14 bits losslessly compressed files in any case, no funny buisness)

OK, damn, the camera is launched today in Denmark. There is a store in Copenhagen with the A7r3 in stock right now.
Still not in a financial situation to let it replace Mr. Turtle, but it will happen eventually! Maybe first during Spring. The weather is normally atrocious here until then anyway.

While very expensive, timelapse+ View has it. It can even establish a WiFi access point so you can control it remotely via phone. And if you have internet access, you can control it via browser as well.
Exposure compensation can be controlled many ways.
I used it on a7r, so it will likely work just fine on the newer models.

No camera is perfect, or caters for 100% of possible use cases. The A7RIII is as good an all-rounder as I've ever seen.... but with that said there are some baffling restrictions.
Such as exposure bracketing (a feature that has existed in DSLRs since the film days). If you want to use exposure bracketing with uncompressed RAW that's fine. If you want to use exposure bracketing with the electronic shutter that's fine. But if you want to use exposure bracketing with uncompressed RAW and the electronic shutter, no you can't do that. You can of course change the shutter speed and do the bracketing yourself, but the camera wont do it for you.
You can now get 14-bit RAW files when shooting with the physical shutter, electronic first curtain, fully electronic shutter, in both single and continuous 10 fps modes.... but not with bulb. If you shoot a 1 second bulb exposure you only get 12-bit, as opposed to shooting a 1 second exposure in manual mode where you get 14

For me at the moment the most frustrating thing is the lack of Lightroom RAW support. I have a couple of days of possible documentary photo work at the beginning of next week where I will have to use my trusty A7rII. Hope they update the RAW convertor asap

I think there’s a way to tweak the files to set them as A7RII photos so Adobe products recognize the files. I’m sorry but I don’t recall the specifics.

Yes I could give that try if desperate but my whole work and print flow has been through Lightroom for years and I know the programme so well it's so quick for me to get what I want. Thanks
