I preordered locally. 4th on the list and the store ordered 10 units from sony. I ordered a week after the pre orders started too.

Best to avoid the big shops with a high demand item.

I ordered exactly at 10 am through Amazon and I’m still nervous about getting it. I’m driving to LA on the first and I want it that morning. I’m hoping they actually ship on the 29th for arrival on the 30th. If it comes on the 1st I’ll pick up at UPS I’m the morning than drive over. Cutting it really close. I️ canceled the zoom for now but than reordered it yeasterday. That maybe 2nd wave and I️ still have not decided on it i just don’t like zooms

Interesting... I’m also travelling to LA on the 2nd before continuing on to South America on the 3rd. I had pre-ordered at B&H but was nervous about it arriving in LA on time. The problem with these big retailers is they can charge your card for the full amount at any point in the process without consultation leaving you with a potential logistics nightmare to sort out if the timing isn’t perfect. I couldn’t afford to pay and then miss the shipment so cancelled my B&H pre-order and now have a pre-order in at Sammy’s in LA for in store pickup. I also have a preorder at the Camera Store (big retailer in Canada) with overnight shipping if it becomes available before the 30th. So I’ve tried to cover myself with local smaller operations that will need a CC over the phone or in person to release the product allowing me to weigh my options at the time. It would all be so much simpler if Sony just released the camera here next week.

Sony is smarter not to confirming that

This interview with the head of Sony Imaging was quite an interesting read:

Sony's market share of FF cams in Japan has increased to 29% during the first half of 2017, but they expect the second half to even better, thanks to the launch of the a7riii.

Their goal is to attack the pro market with mirrorless FF, because as the overall camera market is stagnant/shrinking, it's difficult to just sell more cameras. In these circumstances, consumers are important, but pros even more so. Hence, they launched the a9. Put differently, to maintain your business you have to sell more expensive items. I guess, that's been their official company line for a while already.

Not surprisingly, they know their lens line-up is not on the same level as Canikon's. The plan is to keep churning out five new lenses per year.

The executive in the interview stressed their long-term planning: They are well aware that plenty of people out there still belittle Sony cams as "an electric appliances maker's camera" and at least the exec believe it will take another five years or more to change that perception, with the Tokyo Olympics being one major stop along that "road to recognition".

Yes i pay tax on Amazon. Not a pleasant thing either. Yes 275 in tax. But I️ almost never go through with it. I️ watch B&H or Adorama when they pop online that day and switch. Than I’ll have to pay overnight which is expensive too last minute. Amazon prime member i pay 8 dollars overnight.

Get the Amazon Prime Visa card and you'll get 5% back on every purchase. It can help offset the sales tax. I always take it as a statement credit but you can use it to purchase something off of Amazon. I don't know why anyone would do that though when you can get 5% back on the purchase and then take the statement credit instead.

But...I used my prime card for my purchase at B&H and saved $275 in taxes, plus get 1% back ($32), PLUS get the $120 64G xd card. That's a difference of $427 in my favor buying from B&H! No Amazon for me this time.

I looked at this vs. BH and no tax, and it doesn't totally work out in Amazon's favor.

Amazon is roughly $160 back via the cash back option, but tax is more than that. BH is the better deal it seems.

Ah it has been my hunch for a while that the Tokyo Olympics were an important part of their planning. They are perfectly timed for a decent portfolio of sports lenses to have been developed, and maybe by then (3 year from initial release) an A9 MkII to be released amongst the hype.

I wonder what the real aim of the pro stuff is: is it to make money selling to pros, or do they think that to steal market share from advanced amateurs and the well-heeled, they need a share of the pro market for credibility? My limited hunch about the economics of the industry make me think the latter, but I don't know for sure.

How do you get the SD card bonus? I already pre-ordered long ago. Do I message the sales dept?

David, the interesting thing is that the exec didn't really specify what kind of pros he's targeting, so it seems to be rather broad, as you suggested: Looking at the type of gear many of us around here use, the well heeled amateur market and the pro market overlap to some extent, which is good for them.

It's quite fascinating that they have gone from in a way being the fifth wheel on the car with a-mount to this bold mirrorless FF strategy: Show the world that Sony has become a serious camera maker with a competitive lens line-up, pro service, and is capable of playing with the big boys. It will probably take some money to get the first pros to shoot Sony gear at the Olympics, but what better stage to showcase your "professional" gear. Curious to see what glass we can expect next year.

I can recall back in the 80s and 90s reading that Canon had a policy of massively subsidising gear at the Olympics to make their big whites visible, which lead to their complete dominance at major sporting events. It was expensive, but it indirectly paid huge dividends as it created the impression amongst some amateurs that they were the only 'serious' pro brand, to Nikon's chagrin.

Sony probably faces much higher hurdles of entry, but if they get a few more big white lenses out by then, this might be a strategy that could work, not to achieve market dominance like Canon did, but at least to gain a foothold in the market.

It’s only a better deal if you actually get it in the first wave. B&H is the most popular place to pre-order and on a hot ticket item you can lose out. It’s happened to me before. If 200 units come in even though you hit the bell at 10 am so did 300 other people. It’s a risk here sometimes. Folks will avoid Amazon if there is tax involved but it also lowers the risk. Myself i need the guarantee i get it in my hands . This stuff is a write off for me but if i see in stock which i have seen for many years pop up I switch last second. I’m like 4 our of 5 on this. Lol

Completely agree. But if someone is definitely going to use Amazon, they might as well save 5%, right? :-)

As always, a wonderful piece of writing by David Kilpatrick, devoid of the liabilities of an ambassador:
He talks about the high res mode, which actually doesn’t create a high rez picture like Olympus, but more like Foveon type..

Impressive! More dynamic range as well! And this is going to redefine lens performance!

Thanks for the link. To my eyes it looks like Sony's merging software is doing some large-USM sharpening to the result. Here's a link I generated to their studio scene to demonstrate:

A7rIII, pixel-shift vs regular exposure, crop of currency bills

Note that FM's software may show "link is invalid". Just remove the "https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/link.php?url=" in the URL bar of the resulting page and it will load properly.

How can we compare increased detail from Pixel Shift against other camera systems if the tester is using different lenses!
