p.5 #1 · Pre-orders open! Sony A7R III and FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS lens!

The two features I care about are the better AF tracking and blackout-free EVF. This upgrade underwhelms me, as it seems more like refinements of pre-existing features (e.g. IBIS) or slightly crippled features from the A9 (e.g. better AF tracking, but not A9 tracking).

p.5 #2 · Pre-orders open! Sony A7R III and FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS lens!

I have been holding on upgrading my 5D3 since the 5D4 felt like a side upgrade than a bigger upgrade.
The only think I bought in the last couple of years, was a A6500 while I was in NYC a few months ago. With the sigma adapter, it has been doing great as my every day body now.

With this big upgrade for the ArIII, faster capture, 2 cards, professional focus, I can finally consider starting my upgrade away from canon.

There goes the air in the D850's sails!

I was hoping for the FE400/4 so I could heft it. I'll keep adapting the 400DOii in the mean time.

To be honest, I'm not very shocked. I knew something like this was coming.

I was just hoping that canon will release something to rival it. But canon feels like dragging their feet around.
I love canon glass, but in the last 3 years, their bodies have been meh. So sony finally releasing amazing bodies was just a matter of time, but definitely not a surprise.

The bigger surprise is canon's body lineup not having any answer.

looking pretty good. I am a bit surprised it's not 12FPS like the A99II and it has no focus stacking...

Yep, I'll be preordering the A7RIII. Faster FPS and better buffering performance eliminates 2 of my only complaints with the A7R2.

For all those who said "what I really want is an A99ii in E-mount" you've basically gotten that camera with a few small variances.

You can't really talk about "crippled features from the A9" IMO, as the new A7r3 doesn't use a stacked sensor. You need that if you want superfast silent shooting, AF and blackout-free EVF. However, the stacked sensor has lower dynamic range, so it won't fit with the high image quality goal of the R-series.

It is a matter of choice, can't have both. Yet....

Side note: SonyAlphaRumors's "rumors" are totally made up and should only be viewed as entertainment. They've been so wrong the past few months it's not even funny.

Yeah, I noticed that. That was on SAR, according to the "Photoblographer", not Sony. I think for me this is the critical part. I don't see how it's the same AF with less AF points. My guess is it's much faster than the A7RII, but not as fast as the A9.

I'm also curious to see if eye-AF gets enabled for TAP / MBV/IV, etc.. like on the A9. Those two things were huge for me, especially since I shoot a 70-200 2.8L and 135L.

I do feel bad for those future A7Riii owners and their memory cards. Those of us

i wouldn't expect that Sony released something that will shadow the speed aspects of A9, specially for that price.

I think A7r III is a nice upgrade over the A7r II, it builds over its strenghs, 42 Megapixles, and tackles many of its "problems": speed, battery life, etc...

It is not probably the upgrade many of us were expecting from Sony, like 60 Mpx or so on... maybe for that we should wait for an hypothetical A9r.

Sorry I err to disagree. The D850 sales will continue unabated as there is still a definite place for DSLR's alongside the different MILC's available now.

The A7rIII is the camera that I am definitely interested in and will be getting, but I see it as a replacement for my Fuji system rather the my D850.

It is hilariously bad at this point. It was either the A7III or the A7sIII when they released the RX0, then again the same cameras on RX10 IV then again now.

But hey, if they keep guessing every time they are bound to be right one day. Even a clock is right twice a day.

It can't be. Totally different sensor. The AF data can't be read as fast/often as on the A9 stacked sensor design.

They certainly reused some AF tricks they learned from the development of the A9, but I bet you it is not the same in regards to speed and especially AF tracking.

Could still be plenty fast for most of us, but I would be shocked if it really matched that of the A9.

If I didn't already have two A9's I'd be all over this too. This will replace my A7RII for third body ceremony work with a long lens.

This is different wording about weather resistance than they have used before (sealing vs tight joints and sealing around buttons and dials)

Highly durable and operable in tough conditions The α7R III functions reliably in challenging environments. Its body is fortified by lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover. The number of lens mount screws has been increased to six for enhanced durability. Major buttons and dials are sealed. Sealing is provided throughout the body to minimize entry of dust and moisture (28)

You will never see a statement from any camera manufacturer stating 100% guaranteed against dust and moisture.

I've known about this cam for a few months but didn't know what model it'd introduced as and didn't know about the pixel shift tech. I was kinda hoping they'd label this new 42MP cam as the killer A7iii and give the the A7R3 more MPs. I suppose the new high MP cam will be the A9R but I've got no info on that either way. Regardless, a nice cam that I'll consider upgrading my A7R2 to if the AF works well.

It's been the case with Sony for as long as I can remember and won't be addressed anytime soon. Just like their lack of loseless compressed and either giving you compressed or uncompressed. There's certain things Sony does that makes you wonder. Like how the top slot is slot 2 and the bottom slot is slot 1 or how the card ps go in reverse of other companies and labels out, stuff like that.

Or, how they could update firmware to add the star eater and not give an option to disable it!

Yes that's a given outside underwater cameras. On this camera though they are specifically saying that have seals throughout compare to previous generations. I'd love to see a teardown by Lensrentals to see what this means though

I was just repeating what I read on the sony site:

"Dramatically evolved AF performance

AF performance is improved by inheriting the AF performance used in the α9 and applying it optimally, so once the α7R III captures a wild animal that moves unpredictably, it won’t easily let it go."
