p.33 #1 · Pre-orders open! Sony A7R III and FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS lens!

It’s fairly obvious the A7 series is Sony’s consumer grade and this maybe the last high MPs sensor they produce for it. The A9r is going to be the much higher sensor and much higher price in the 5k range. I’m not going to wait that long till that comes out. Some will but for many hobbyist screaming for more the real question is are you going to lay out 5 grand for one. This A7rIII is going to sell like hot cakes. This is the direction they are going and I think they maybe a ways out on getting to a bigger sensor

For many the A7rII has served us very well, I know it did for me but I had my speed issues with it and Sony knows they did. For them they addressed all the complaints in this. Well almost, star eater. But battery life was a constant source of pain for them. This A9 battery is fantastic. I did two long weekend trips shooting city stuff took three batteries no charger and only used 2. So that clearly solved that. Putting in Eye Af from the A9 was really needed. The A7rII EYe Af was good but if your subject turned there head it lost the tracking. The A9 does not do that it sticks like glue. Don’t underestimate this upgrade folks, it’s a marvel in the A9. They are claiming faster AF, better tracking and things that are very similar to the A9. If it’s just a notch below it than it’s clearly killing the A7rII. Than you start adding in other features and again I’ll say this the closer this 3 is to the A9 the better we are as that cam is amazing . So if you need 42mpx and you need closer to the functions of the A9 and it’s abilities. And at its original price you can moan and groan all day long but this is a good upgrade be it you agree or not, the facts are in the pudding here. Question is do you need it, for some probably not worth the upgrade but anyone needing the speed and functions that are closer to the A9 than this is a no brainer IMHO. It already looks like pre-orders just on this forum are through the roof.

Do I agree with Sony on all counts. Absolutely not but it’s the system we shoot and for me Nikon,Canon don’t even exist. So any comparison to them is meaningless to me. IM NOT SWITCHING AGAIN. Lol I don’t care what they make. I actually never been in the Nikon,Canon forums to post anything. God I wish they stayed out of Sony’s forums.

What's clear is that the A7 series will compete against the cash cow line up from Nikon and Canon in the D750/D850 and the 6D2/5D4

The A9 series will compete against the 5DsR/1Dx2

Maybe so on the A9 series but it maybe dipping after the MF market on the A9r. That’s a good plan regardless if it is or is not. But I really think they drew lines in the sand and finally said this is consumer and this is Pro. As end users I believe that’s a good thing

But there are things where Sony needs to wrap its head around and that is more continued support after the sale in firmware and keep improving the base of end users. This is maybe the most frustrating part of Sony. There are tweaks to be made that don’t require a new body. Here on the A7rIII some hardware changes happened with battery but they can continue to push the envelope with firmware too.

There are enough fans out there who would buy any new Sony (A7xxx / A9xxx) model.
I would like a more critical approach to the new products, to get more out of my money in the future.

The A7 / R was a milestone for little money. Since then nothing has happened to my needs. In my opinion, the image results at Base ISO of the A7R by day and by night are clearly better than with the A7RII (below 40mm focal range because of the shutter shock).
The prices are very much higher now, but the raws aren't really better.

Been looking at the Sony A7R3 raws available on the web and I’m very impressed with the high ISO performance. The grain looks ok, but the details and colours look better than A7R2.

Absolutely Sony is building a good base of end users. That’s what keeps Nikon,Canon going for many years. Sony maybe is finally getting that base. A lot of folks are switching we see that everyday here.

I don't disagree. My original comment was speaking to the lack of utility of 16-bits on current FF sensors due to noise. The fact that Sony pads/extends 14-bit samples in their 16-bit pipeline would be another demonstration of that. That they then can't trim the data back down to 14-bits during image transfer is again a function of not designing that function into their ASIC, thinking they would never need to.

Ahh wires have gotten crossed - I think the post you replied to was talking about the drop from 14-bits to 12-bits in bulb mode (I know it appears to reference the 16-bit stuff, but then it talks about the footnote (which details the 14 to 12 bit drop) and "throwing away data when processing the least time sensitive stuff" i.e. bulb mode), not the use of a 16-bit pipeline with 14-bit data.

For clarity, I totally agree that a 16-bit ADC is just oversampling noise, but I don't believe the drop to 12-bit in bulb mode has anything to do with noise, space saving or anything else. I think it makes no sense on its own and is simply an artifact of some other design decision.

The 11-bit is companded with a tone curve. In the shadows where it matters it is equivalent to 13-bit linear data. So even in compressed RAW there is a difference between 12-bit and 14-bit ADC readout as far as shadow noise goes.

Arrgh you're right - I knew it curved the data, but I thought it started at 11-bit for the shadows and went down from there, but no, it's 13-bit for the shadows, scaling down to 9-bit for the highlights.

One reason I shoot Sony was the detail in those higher ISO shots. I never get past 6400 but if my 3200 stuff is really good I’m thrilled because I will shoot over 20k in images in a couple days shooting runway and adding noise corrections to C1 will slow that processing down and I’m fighting time. I need to upload those images and make sales.

Thank you! If the A7RIII offers significantly improved AF performance with the TAP and TA-GA3, I'll need to use this persuasive economic analysis when presenting my case to the Department. Have you already received approval from the Central Committee?

The CC has now sent a pre-requisition to Georges in the City....

So now on to the liquidations before payment is due!

One thing I've been wondering: With Canikon one key difference between the D5/1DX series and the lower priced bodies is the drive speed with converters. The 1DX2, for instance, drives an f2.8 or f4 prime extremely quickly and reliably even with a 2x TC. Supposedly, this is thanks to larger batteries compared to the 7D/5D series.

However, with e-mount that analogy doesn't work, as the a7riii and the a9 share the same battery. Does anybody have any elaborated guesses whether there will be a difference between these two cameras when used with TC combos?

All the talk (and I can understand why) on the Riii I missed or glanced at the 24-105g and just now got my pre-order in.
Having the 12-24G and 100-400GM this new lens gives up with TCs 12-800mm in three lenses! A no-brainer for a really concise travel kit.
So here's hoping the 24-105 is as good as the 12-24.

The initial reviews and functionality of the A7rIII look great, but it will interesting to see how the new 24-105 f4 lens performs. This is such a great work horse and go to lens when you don't have the time messing around changing lenses. I have the 24-105 f4 Art version and this lens is superb.

So, *perfection* would have been the ability to adjust the size of the RAW file, perhaps? Would shooting in APS-C mode do that? I think I've read that its 18MP...so...just wondering.

Smaller than FF doesnt excite me much while mRAW maybe.. but I would be still paying for the 42 MP sensor 😬

I'm not an apologist. I'm a user. And I am more than "used" to the A9. I'm some ways I actually prefer it to my Nikons, which I've been using for almost a decade, and my Leica M, which I sold to fund the A9. As I hope we both realize, ergonomics is a subjective thing - as such your dislike for the Sony camera format doesn't turn all who disagree with you into "apologists." That's silly. After all, maybe you're the one that's being too demanding and inflexible.

Fair enough. I’ve always made clear that ergonomics is subjective, but you can’t deny that there are many Sony users who say they shoot Sony despite the sub-par ergonomics compared to their previous cameras and who express a desire to get used to it over time, instead of calling on Sony to fix it in future releases.

To me, the last major leap in sensor performance was during the A7R / D800 era. After that, changes have been incremental as far as sensor performance goes. The A7R still has an amazing sensor even today.

I agree with your assessment, Fred. That 36MP Sony sensor was a seismic shift in imaging. And certainly the mirrorless revolution has benefited Sony's FF approach.

Still, I feel the Canon 5Ds's 51MP sensor gets short shrift on its resolution, mostly due to perceived shortcomings in its DR. It seems to me that now after the release of the D850 and a7R3, the ball is clearly in Canon's court to deliver a 60-70MP (or more) sensor with somewhat improved DR, continuing their dominance of high resolution and challenging "medium format" imaging.

I’ll admit the a5xxx and a6xxx cameras are a bit small for my hands, my pinky just drops off at the end. However every Sony camera I’ve owned I’ve bought a small half case usually for cheap like under $50. I do it both to protect the body and it improves the grip tremendously. I guess it’s better to have a small camera that you can always add onto whereas a large camera you can’t change.

A pretty good first-look at the 24-105 F4 here:
