Isn't a new 5DS replacement on the horizon? I assumed they would release it at the NY show this week.
While I really hope for a 5DS replacement, I expect it to come at a higher price than the A7rIII, and it will not bring those high performance features like the A7rIII, so they don't hurt the 5D4 sales.
If the A7rIII auto focus is as fast as the 5D4, it will be in the right place in terms of price/features to be a good alternative for both 5DS replacement and 5D4. Especially with the quality of sony sensors.

Fair dinkum. And it will happen.

OMG. Hit it out of the park. So sell the A7r for this and keep the A7rii as backup and use with Smooth Reflections etc.
I'mm not at all bothered about some 'issues' some people seem to be worried about (extra DR , new batteries etc.) fact is the A7rii is already a brilliant camera and Sony have just made it even better (and more suitable for pro wedding and event shooters with dual slots, longer battery life, 10 fps, 8fps silent shooting, improved video etc.).
The only downside for me is the loss of the Playmemories apps. Even the price is as expected and about the same at launch as the A7rii if I remember correctly (though may now).
Brilliant update and Sony listened to their users big time.

On the whole I'm pretty happy with my A7rII's and they generally give me the performance I need BUT the A7rIII definitely gives me some advantages for portrait and event work like better eye-AF and continuous silent shooting etc. I will trade in one of the A7rII's for the new model and keep the other especially as I see the new model doesn't support play memory apps which I sometimes use (why I don't understand). As I use 2 cameras in tandem when shooting landscape I feel that the IQ will be generally be similar enough for this combo to still work for me

I feel we are approaching a plateau of FF camera performances and ergonomics and it comes down to fine tuning what we prefer, A7rII, A7rIII, A9, D5, D850 or 5DIV. I have been fortunate try all these cameras except of course the A7rIII and to be honest they are all great. What excites me the most now are the latest lenses arriving on the scene and how they perform on the newer cameras!

I’d like to upgrade, but Sony are changing $3700US ($4900AU) in Australia for this camera. While I paid $3000US ($3900AU) when I preordered the A7r2. Our currency v the US dollar has actually improved since then.

I just realized that when in crop mode the AF points get closer to the edges in surface area. I’m good to go. I shoot those big runway shows in crop mode and was worried about EYe Af getting faces on verticals.

Wait for the real price. Even at launch the cheaper places have charged a lot less than Sony's "price"
Also, note that that is only $US500 more than the US price, and $US320 of that is GST, so even at Sony's official price you would only be paying $180 more than the US price. Shipping would be at least $50 so it's about $130 for the warranty. And I'll bet Leederville or Digidirect will more than $130 less than official ...

That is kind of strange. Here in Europe I paid 3698 Eur for preorder of my current A7R II and just preordered A7R III for 100 Eur less.

Leederville are charging $4800 with a 2 year warranty. So maybe Sony were charging less for A7r2 in Australia.
Even so, I think I’ll wait for a sale in 6months. As I’m almost a pure landscape photographer with my Sony cameras. The AF isn’t a huge deal for me.

shopbot is a friend, give them a week or so. Here is an example a7rII listing, I've bought from several outlets on this page. It's a consumer good like a TV or DVD player so shop cheap.

The first few off the list are imports and with Australian warranties. You still have to pay 10% GST/duty and shipping and it may work out cheaper. I often buy directly from the US through some friends

Here in New Zealand it looks like it'll be NZ$ 5,699. We have 15% GST tax here, which means before tax, based on the current exchange rate, it's US$ 3,406. That's about what I expected unfortunately, a couple of hundred more for NZ. But it could be worse, some electronics have a much bigger 'bottom of the earth tax'.

I have one quick question : since multiple exposures were done, I believe, with a Playmemory app, does it mean that the A9/A7RIII no longer have the capacity to perform multiple exposures ?

Yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised that it's under 6k, seeing as the nikon d850 comes in closer to that. Looking at putting in an order once some reviews come out, not that I have any real concerns with what I can see

SAR posted an A7RII vs A7RIII table that was taken from a Sony pdf. The PDF has pretty much all of the info we've seen and includes the 15 stop DR we've heard referenced (page 17), although not how it's achieved. The pdf can be downloaded from the Sony website close to the bottom of the page under the light bulb video (brochure download) https://www.sony.com/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-7rm3

So, you like having to carry a lot of extra batteries? I'm sure the new processor on the a7RIII is more demanding than previous models, so using the FW50's will probably drain quicker. The FW50's have terrible battery life, one of the biggest complaints from the cameras that you mentioned. I run the new FZ100 batteries for almost an entire 8hr wedding day on my a9. Yes, they cost more, but you won't need more than two. Just sayin
Given I also have several other Sony cameras all taking FW50s I could end up having to carry even more batteries plus an extra charger after upgrading to the A7RIII!
However I don't begrudge Sony for changing it even if it's less convenient for me - the number of people complaining about battery life plus the new power hungry LSI they would have been stupid not to upgrade the battery!

I look at this a different way. I carry 2 A7R2 bodies and 6 spare 50's. If I replace one of my R2 bodies with an R3 then I'll carry 3 50's and 1 spare for the R3, so less weight and space I think. I do have to take the extra charger if going away, but it stays in the car/hotel, so I'm not carrying too far.
