He had one that was not sharp . I sent him my Big Bronco test and he knew something was wrong. I got lucky as I do have a really good one. It tested very well. I was actually shocked how good it was . It was on par or better than my CV 35 1.7. The midzone is very good and corners really came in at 5.6 but 6.3 for perfection. You need to test your lenses. Honestly there are only 2 I really trust to be good Cv 65 and the Batis 135. Everything else in every brand is suspect. Sometimes we get lucky and sometimes we don’t. I’ve been on a streak of lens good luck. But I have had some real duds too. ...Show more →
Add the Loxia 50/2 to that list. I never saw a bad copy of this lens.
Reading SAR and seems like Voigtlander going to launch a 35mm f1.4! I mentioned I preferred 35mm focal length and this lens might be something I longed for, hopefully it will have similar vibe like this 40mm.
But that being said, as much as I love RX1R's 35mm, this 40mm can do much more due to the f1.2 aperture. Love that pop produced by this lens! And like RX1R, the rendering has this "bring me back to scene" kind of vibe. Love it!
Well, my infinity tests with the 40/1.2 don't produce nearly the same level of sharpness that Fred displayed in his tests. Certainly focusing in the center produces not the sharpest corners, but even focusing in the mid-field only produces mid-field sharpness and the center and edges are not good.
Focused at the working aperture for all shots.
Same results on the A7RII and A7RIII.
This copy is going back to B&H . . .
I have to say, based on this copy, I'm not terribly impressed. Not terribly sharp stopped down at infinity and not terribly sharp at 1-2 meters wide open (or f/2). Hopefully I got a sub-par copy.

The ccv 1.4/35 they are releasing is a modification of the ‘classic’ one for M.
Lots of people will like it. But it won’t be especially sharp or well behaved at wider apertures, less so that the 40. It’s intended more as a kind of ‘character’ period lens. It’s very small though, so if you like that look....
So, may have been discussed - did a search and didn't find anything - Any optical (or other significant) differences between the Sony and M-mount version?
Am thinking about this lens, and whether or not I'd prefer some native EXIF values, over using it with the TAP.
Well, you found the right thread, there are some comparisons here. Here is my take on it. It was discussed somewhere there, try page 35 to 40 or so, or posts by SharpContrast.

Thanks.
I have examined controlled tests and found that when using the VM version on the stock Sony body, there will be induced field curvature. (That can possibility be mitigated by using a PCX front lens)
The E-mount version of this lens is one of the brightness lenses you can put on an A7.
Which includes a well known m-mount 0.95 lens from my father (when adaped to the Sony A7rmkii).
I think this maybe due to having significantly less vingeting and being designed for the Sony Sensor.
I've also had it up against and a fd50mm 1.2 L and it just beat that.
So if you want great low light lens, this is the one to get.

I'm a recent transplant from Fuji-X into Sony. As much as I love character, I also need a lens that can handle delivering "professional" results, for those occasions people are actually paying me to take photos. Which is what I used to use the XF35mm 1.4 for.
I'm not obsessive about the deficits I've seen from this lens, as I'm aware of these in ALL my gear, and adapt my usage accordingly. What excites me most about this lens is the size. Coming from Fuji, it was quite easy to travel light and still get knoockout IQ. The native offerings from Sony/Zeiss are mostly unappealing for me, with the exception of the 55/1.8, because of their size (and price point). I may as well shoot a DSLR (or sell a kidney to buy a Leica M adapter and a lens).
This thing appears to be a DREAM. I don't care about AF. Heck, I prefer MF in most scenarios. I'd like to have a small setup for carrying around town. I'll likely have to wait until tax refund season, though
Now off to read the remaining 50 pages of this thread...
Trying to decide if I should sell the 35mm 1.2 (v2) and pick up the 40.
I don't use the 35mm much, if at all, and generally prefer slightly longer FLs, compared to the traditional common ones like 35, and 50.
/rubs chin a lot
i had the 35/1.2 and sold it, also the 35/1.7. Definitely prefer the 40/1.2 over the 35/1.2. 35/1.2 has nice rendering but 40/1.2 is much sharper wide open and also lighter and more compact.

True. I own an "original" Lydith, and while it is one of my favorite lenses, when I heard it was being re-issued, I was like, "uhhhh... why?"
And then I saw the projected list price and was even more confused. This could be a trend toward legitimizing optically-imperfect "character" lenses as valid artistic tools, but seriously. Don't try to charge boutique prices for this stuff. I got a Helios 44-2 from some guy in the Ukraine for like 30 bucks. If you want crazy vignetting and distortion, you can use $20 CCTV lenses, for crying out loud! Why anyone would pay close to a grand for a lo-fi look which can be easily achieved through ACTUAL cheap gear.
This Nokton, though. Jeez. Come on, tax refund season!!
