You're not just selling me on this lens (not that I needed anymore convincing)...you're making me really want to pick up an M-mount film body as well! Such lovely shots.
hi everyone, there are really some beautiful pictures in this thread!
i am very new to this forum, have not gone through all 275 pages, and apparently am not good at making good use of the search function either. but i am wondering if anyone has compared this voigtlander 40mm to the more recent sony fe 40/2.5 G?
40mm is my ideal focal length, so i am just looking at my options for a sony a7rii.
autofocus does not matter to me really, the smaller size of the sony is attractive though, as is the lower price. but ultimately i care most about image quality, and would probably buy the voigtlander second hand anyway. i take most of my pictures around f8-11 though, so would not really take advantage of the speed of this lense often. the pictures i have seen of this voigtlander really are very nice though, so am tempted..
thanks!
At F8 to F11 the images will appear fairly similar. If you compared them you would subtle differences that I would lean toward the Voightlander being more attractive. Color and contrast would be different, and if it's more of a classic film look, I think, it could be argued the Voight would be better. Don't get me wrong the Sony is gonna be very sharp and impressive, if your not a snob of sorts the Sony would do just as good a job or better at F8. Just my thoughts others might differ.
thank you for this quick reply. film look (2.0) is exactly what thought browsing through this thread & what really attracts me to the voigtlander. it just seems most people use it at larger apertures, so it could be this too. but i think i will just try to find a nice used copy. beautiful looking lense too.
Awesome photos @grahamgibson. I've got the sony version of this lens that I use to take photos of the family but you're making me want to get an M-mount version for my film camera! Although I could sell my e-mount version and get an adapter to use it on both cameras.... tempting.

Last time I looked, there was a Voigtlander Bessa R3A with CV40 on B&S right now that looks like a pretty good deal
I was even tempted cause the CL rangefinder I’m using is not ideal for this lens, but the Bessa has a really nice one.

I have this 40mm 1.2 lens but was wondering - those who have this lens - how often do you actually shoot at f1.2?
50% of the time when I have it, especially mid distance subjects, and 90% when shooting portraits (it's cutting my eyes by f2). This lens will make you forget about sharpness and focus on the character.

Just a smidgen shy of 100%. About the only time I stopped it down was for the occasional group shots or the very rare landscape shot. That being said though, it should be noted that I also used the taboo setup of the M Mount version with Techart adapter.
