Ideally one should pick their favorite focal length as the three f/1.2 Nokton lenses (35, 40 and 50mm) offer similar rendering and IQ.
The 35mm and 50mm are slightly better optically but the CV 40/1.2 seems to be the best compromise when carrying only one lens.
While they test similarly, I just don't see the same beautiful signature from the many CV 50/1.2, and the few CV 35/1.2, posts here on FM. The 40/1.2 seems to have the right combination of attributes, wide open and stopped down, that makes for a very versatile lens, especially in combination with the slightly wide focal length.
I'm a 35mm guy, and have tried all the lenses in that focal length looking for one I really like. Hasn't happened, so I am on my third copy of the CV 40. I kept talking myself out of the focal length and selling it. It's a keeper.

I just bought a voigtlander 40 SE. I notice strange friction at the end of the focus ring movement, near the infinity mark. Is it normal? Thanks a lot.

Sounds abnormal. Just got mine yesterday and it's smooth until the hard stop.
40mm is the perfect focal length for me. It's amazing that I prefer 35 or 50mm for portraits, but 40mm is perfect for traveling.
My Voigtlander is really very good when stopped down, only with open apertures it could be a bit sharper, despite the great image impression it can create.
Torn between this and the 50mm. Currently own the 55 1.8 Zony and 40 Batis. Will keep either even if I pull the trigger on CV. The love for the 40mm seems bigger here. Is the 50mm missing something?
