You're completely right about the sharpness of the lens improving with distance when wide open. Starting to learn the quirks of the lens and I am completely in love with it.
Down the hill from my house is a small lookout with two small benches. My Wife and I ate our lunch there today since it was just so perfect out. This is the view from our lunch bench. Large formations of Pelicans riding the updrafts, never having to flap a wing. So graceful. We are fortunate to live here.
Since it was lunch time there was horrible mid-day light, the worst conditions to make an image. Still, it is hard to make such a beautiful scene look bad no matter the light. The little VC 40mm 1.2 captures it well. So sharp, such brilliant colors, and beautiful rendering.
