Is it because of its rendering or do you prefer 50mm over 40mm focal length?

The most interesting thing about this lens is it's lovely corner softness,(accompanied alas by pronounced chromatic aberrations), on both sides of the image along with very sharp center,even wide open. 50/1.2 is very similar,but narrower fov allows for better subjective perception,
A bit too narrow for a moderate wa (subject of personal taste,of course) and a bit too long to be a regular nifty fifty (for me).
And yes,I think that I prefer 50mm over 40mm somehow,
Yet this lens will stay with me,just to fit the combination of 21/3.5-40/1.2-65/2-110/2.5 E Voigtlanders,where it fits just the right place in the row.
