The best way to avoid having to switch EFCS to 'off' whenever shooting at shutter speeds above 1/2000s is to use full electronic shutter (silent shutter).
Of course, if you are shooting action without a Sony A9, this may not be the best solution as you may get some skew. Keep in mind that this bokeh rendering "ill-effect" is only noticeable with fast lenses (f/1.2 until about f/1.8). I barely see it with slower lenses.

Wow, I have never seen that before. Friggin' crazy, thanks for the link.
I did a quick search, it doesn't look like there is a quick way to switch the EEFC on and off, can't assign it to as one of options in FN or one of the C buttons. I could be wrong.

One can add it to My Menu, not as fast as a button but not bad.
Also Fred mentions to go to full E-shutter as a possible potion.

Thanks. Wide open the difference ought to be primarily in the corners, no?
Stopping down to f/5.6 both should produce sharp images, I assume.
I. Am still thinking of getting the M mount version to use with the TAP on A9.
K-H.
That’s possible, I haven’t done scientific tests and I normally add vignette to corners... to show how important the corners are to me 😂. I tend to use this lens for its shallow DoF handling versus landscapes etc, so my corners are usually made up of bokeh.

Are you using the M mount version on Sony? There was a comparison posted earlier in this thread that seems to show rather significant differences. If you're using the M on a Leica body, then no, you wouldn't notice a difference, since it's designed for that cover glass.
Photos above are all on a Sony A7rII with the VM version. I do also use the 40 on my m240

Is there a significant reason to not use the full manual shutter instead of EFCS? Just the extra noise and wear?
It can create vibrations that show up in the image at certain shutter speeds especially with longer lenses. The original A7r had this problem and the EFCS fixes it.
PS. I had the M mount version and IQ was NOT the reason I sold it and why I'm getting the FE version (just want less hassle with the EXIF data etc). I think it was pretty awesome IQ-wise and even for landscapes stopped down it was really, really sharp. Even the corners.
Sometimes AF would be nice. It's the reason why I often think about buying a VM version on top. But I hate to add the "same lens" just for AF.
Now the 50/1.2 VM is close to release. Is someone else also thinking about buying it? I expect it will perform quite similar to the 40/1.2 VM.

Very interesting thanks, seems Silent Shooting is the way to go (at least for not moving targets), you even spare the shutter mechanism a lot of actuations as a boon
What you are telling about the M-mount version is encouraging, as I was thinking seriously about this lens, and having a Techart Pro, the temptation to have it AF on the Sony is of course very high, but the various web comparisons with the FE's IQ have always kept me on the fence, unable to decide between the two..

I have the FE 40/1.2 and I was a bit tempted to add this new 50/1.2 VM to my M/LTM mount collection (e.g. by trading in some of my other M/LTM lenses) but I'm holding off for now as I prefer the native FE versions and if Cosina later came up with an FE version of 50/1.2 I'd rather add that. Still waiting for the 110/2.5 and the 21/3.5 too and Batis 40/2 might come into consideration too so have to consider the overall lens budget
I have TAP also but I've not been using it so much recently. I tend to prefer shooting those M/LTM lenses manually with my small and light Rayqual adapter.
I just finished readunf fron page one 😂 so it seems the E version will be better for my work. Now, as to which to get, the Voigt or Sony Zeiss 50. Leaning towards the compact Voigtlander.

Yes Juha, it's the longer version of my own thinkings... Although I don't like the Batis handling, especially the lack of an aperture ring. But 40 is so damn nice... Then there is the 110/2.5 with macro capabilities soon... And probably all those rumours about new Sony bodies will bring other costs into account. For me, I would love to see an APSC with a9-AF and great video performance... In this case, the lenses may wait...

YES!! We haven't heard anything new about the VE 110 or 21 now for a while. I'm really only interested in the 21 currently, but the money I'd allocated for that lens just went to a Laowa 15mm. Extremely happy with it, btw. It has already earned a firm 2nd place in my kit only because I love my 40/1.2 so so much.
Hopefully Photokina will herald a pre-order/ship date for these guys. Keep us posted if you hear anything, too!

These are excellent, love the B&W processing
Thanks! I've applied a custom curve (different for every shot) where contrast is high in the midtones, but low in shadows and highlights. Looks a lot more like film than if you just boost overall contrast.
