Once the Batis is out will evaluate it along with my Sony 35 2.8 and a tapped 40 1.2 to see which will be my travel lens. For me, travel gear needs AF.

I have a feeling many will. But I also think there will be people who own both. I think its fair to say that a huge hole in the lineup has finally been plugged!

Aaaah, of course! That explains the size of the "plug".
I owned the Batis 85/1.8 for a couple years and I remember it being a big lens. The new 40/2 will feel very much alike.
Having said that I'm curious how the new Batis will compare to the RX1RII and 55/1.8 ZA in terms of rendering.

And I have the Batis 25. While not huge or so, it just annoys me that it's extremely much larger than it would have to be. What's the point? I left Nikon because I wanted a smaller system, including small lenses.
I'd like to see a modern Loxia 40 instead. AF is nothing I want or even like to use.

I find the Batis 25 to be a great travel lens. Nice weight, size, AF, speed and image quality. One of my go to lenses for street and environmental photos.

You should try the Loxia 25/2.4. It's my favorite wide angle at the moment and pairs nicely with the CV 40/1.2. When AF is needed I still love the RX1RII.

Will most likely do! But I'm not getting the Batis sold. Ice cold on the local used market.
I never "need" AF, so that's no problem at all. When I want to go lightweight I use an RX100 III.

It's ridiculous how this lens pushed me even further to fast apertures. An f2.8 zoom feels now like a cheap travel lens.
It's not only the quality, focal length but also the impressive quality and beautiful rendering. It's hard to believe someone will trade that for having AF as the single advantage.
Adressed to Fred and Guy: I’m envisaging to compose my 35 - 40 FL with two lenses: the most technically “perfect”/neutral Samyang 35 1.4 and one of the following (as smaller and more creative/artistic glasses): CV 40 1.2 Nokton, CV 35 1.7 Ultron, or even Loxia 35 2.0 or CV 40 1.2 Nokton. Could you kindly advice on which would be the best combo in terms of complementarity? Also, please, what would be the main use for each.
Finally, both of you have said that Samyang 35 1.4 and CV 40 1.2 Nokton have similar rendering… could you please specify what are you referring to. Is ghosting/veiling flare included in this appreciation? Thank you.

How many of you 40mm F1.2 owners have a lens hood for it and if so do you use the rather pricey Voigtlander one or a 3rd party option?
The nice metal lens hood is shipped with the lens. I always keep it skrewed as it is rather small.

Hi Enri,
The Samyang 35 1.4 AF is a great lens and in many aspects optically better compared to the much more expensive Zeiss 35/1.4 ZA. Its specular highlights (bokeh balls) are much cleaner and outlining is well controlled. The transition zone is smooth and that translates to pleasant rendering for most scenes even at mid-distance. The Zony version is not as sharp / contrasty wide open and has busier inner structures (onion ring pattern) but its rendering is also smooth and balanced. My issue with the Samyang is focus accuracy and speed. It's good but not in the same level as Sony natives. Resolution is not as good as the Zony at MFD but it does better at infinity distance.
Which lens to pair with the Sammy? The CV 35/1.7 Ultron is an amazing lens when coupled with the PCX 5m front-lens (to correct for field curvature). I'd say it's similar to the 40/1.2 in contrast and resolution at f/1.7, so it all depends if you want to mod your lens and/or value the f/1.2 aperture. Given the current choices and prices, I would skip the Loxia 35/2 and 35/1.7 and go for the 40/1.2 Ultron E-mount.

I'm very fond of my CV 40/1.2, especially as I learn it's behavior. However, there are times I would benefit from AF and weather resistance. So, ideally I'd also get this Batis 40/2, or perhaps try my luck with the 35/1.4....
